Strange problem with filesystem...

Recommended Posts

For some strange reason, defragmenter is reporting two different sets of numbers for the amount of free space I have. At the top where it says C: it shows the correct percentage of free space, but the graph shows an incorrect percentage of free space. When I finish defragmenting the graph gets closer to the real value but it still way off - the more I defragment the closer I get to a correct graph. However, it appears that defragmenting doesn't really do anything, if I close defragmenter and start it again then it shows that ridiculously large number in the graph again!

See the picture I have attached, it should give you a better idea of what's happening.

It is very strange though. I've used the Disk Check utility to fix filesystem errors and try to recover bad sectors (on drive C: and D:) but it didn't seem to do any good.

Does anyone have know what could be causing this discrepancy and how I could fix it?

Okay, I believe I have solved the problem. I created a full backup of the files on my C: partition, reformatted it, reinstalled windows, then restored the files from the backup. Disk Defragmenter appears to be reporting the information accurately in the graph now :)
