Extending FireFox - My Recommendation

Recommended Posts

I’ve been using Mozilla FireFox almost exclusively now for over a year. I’ve put together a list of the extensions that I feel really turn it into a power house. I use it not only to surf the web but, I use it to help in my job, check my e-mail, and RSS feeds.

there was a thread here with firefox expensions. there are a few other really good ones you should include in the list if you what this to be a guide to firefox good extensions. however if you just wanted to share your setup then i guess you could have just posted in that thread too, since it is not an essential guide.

well exensions are useful, but you list is far from complete. personally i would consider essential a bit different set of extensions.

that is why, if you are posting it under a guide i recommend referensing back to the https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=344486&hl=

and maybe compile a big guide of all the truely useful extensions with brief descriptons and download links.

now that would be a worthwhile task. :)

if not however at least the other thread would be another reference point after your guilde for people looking for new extensions

I have to disagree. You have left out some of the BEST extension for Firefox. Have you ever tried the NoScript extension? For security it IS essential! It blocks sites from using Java, Javascript, flash or can block all plugins from being used on untrusted sites.

And for your adblock, I would use adblock plus over adblock. Way more features and it's starting to look as though Adblock is no longer being developed. The devs for adblock haven't even posted in their own forums in over a month.

Thats just to name a couple that I think you should consider adding to essential extensions. Just my 2 cents of course, but I thought I had to post here for those that don't know.

Edit: More would be openbook, keywordselection,Disable targets for downloads, download manager tweak, and Permit cookies (with cookies disabled for all sites then you use this to ad sites to your list that are allowed). And maybe spellbound for people like me that can't spell correctly.. I can get close but no correct. Just trying to help out, your site looks great btw.

If you allow every site your go to, to run Javascript, java, flash or access every plug in, then yea it can be a problem. I can see that. But I don't. I allow very few sites to run anything it wants to. And never had issues with it. But each to their own. Almost every flaw that's been found in Firefox (yes there are some) has been with the aid of javascript, java, flash or some other plugin. Might want to think about that. But this is your opinion on the best/must have extensions. I was just trying to help. Thanks for your reply though.

HAHA your list is definetly not the "essential" plugins list...take a few from here.

Thread starter, no one should use Adblock anymore, it's junk. The development of Adblock pretty much stopped in 2004.

Use Adblock Plus instead.

Primexx, your link for Adblock Plus is WAY out of date. You're linking to some verison 0.5.x when the latest version is 0.7.

Update your link to http://adblockplus.mozdev.org/

I agree with ev0| on this. Adblock plus (0.7) is way better then adblock. Run down list of things I like better about it.

1. You can enable/disable individual filters. Yea.. one at a time if you have one that makes things bad on one site, but don't want to see the ads on that same site.. This is awesome.

2. Hit counter. It shows which of your filters are actually blocking ads and work best.

3. Much better elements blocking. You can block things adblock simply can't.

4. Huge performance improvements for those that use simple filters. Now you don't have to be a regex expert to block ads without it costing you in page loading time. Fact it's faster then using regex. And much easier to edit the list.

There is a ton of other things too, but these are the ones that are at the top of my list of must haves that adblock simply doesn't have. And after a simple update a while back development on adblock seems to have stopped yet again.

I have a great deal of respect for the original makers of adblock extension. But this one has taken up where they left off.

but in any case it's not out dated. the 5.x is a different branch as the 7.x (6.x at the time), and at the time of post 5.x had more features than 6.x, Also, that version still has some features than the current 7.x doesnt have, though I myself am using the newer one as of now.
