The candidates:

* DVD RW LG Double Layer +/- 16X

* DVD RW SAMSUNG TS-H552 Double Layer +/- 16X

* DVD RW ASUS DRW-1608P/D +/- 16X

I'm gonna buy some new hardware these days [RAM, Mouse, Gamepad, Keyboard, ...] and I thought about a DVD writer lately. It's urgent, but I'd like to be prepared if a DVD crosses my way and needs to be burned  I currently have a LG writer [52x32x42x] which is realy good and a Samsung DVD-ROM [16x] which I'm not happy with because it's very noisy :pinch: so I'd like to get rid of the Samsung drive aswell.

So what do you think is the best out of those three DVD burners ? They are all double layer +/- 16x writers ... but what makes the difference ?

ah! bosadjanin. :)

zao mi je sto nemozes da uzmes DW1640, stvarno je najbolji rezac sto postoji za tu cenu..

od tih tri, ja bih izabrao LG. jedini je sto snima DVD-RAM, a ostalo sve solidno radi.

umm i hope you speak Yugoslavian... :)

The Asus is the only one out of those that burns DVD-R DL as well as DVD+R DL. And at a pretty decent speed, too (6x). That reason enough? Hehe.

well yea, but -R DL is still an obscure and unsupported format and i doubt that will change. i'd much rather go with the dying DVD-RAM support. i don't know what chips Asus uses, but LG is known for making quality burners and the GSA-4164B (i'm thinking that's the one on display there) does well all-around.

Would you call DVD-RAM a very supported medium? DVD-R DL will no doubt grow. The same cannot be said about DVD-RAM, which has been made obsolete by the dominance of DVD+-RWs.

lg

i own 2 lg drives and i am very happy with it, lg bundles with nero and i think thats great too.

-internal dvdrw/cd combo (a few years back)

-external gsa-5163d super-multi dvd/cd rewriter (a few months back)

other brands i've heard neowin members blab about:

plextor

benq

pioneer

nec

you can't go wrong with a BenQ, I got one and it is by far the best burner for money, just check out some of the reviews and youll know what i'm talking about.

No doubt about it :) Nothing short of a Plextor will beat it. Hehe, Im a bit of a Plextor fanboy. For the price, though, the BenQ is just too good

yea, DVD-RAM is definitelly dying a certain death, but i don't see -R DL expanding either. going with a burner with DVD-R DL capabilities would be the smarter thing to do to insure future support, but if that support will take years to implement (by which time he's bound to get an upgrade anyway), he's better off with something be can use now. i liked DVD-RAM, it promised big things, it's a shame it wasn't marketed better.

plus, i'd go with LG just because of the brand and my experience. never used an Asus burner before.

You have a good point there. However, I don't see why the deployment of DVD-R DL media shoud take years...More like months. Perhaps you can change my mind on this issue, since there is something I don't fully grasp: what are the benefits of DVD-RAM over, say, DVD+RW? Is the media cheaper? Im ceartain its not more widely available, but does it have any technical benefits? It it does, I rest my case and concede the LG might be a better choice.

As far as I can see the LG supports DVD+R DL too  btw, I think that's a LG GSA-4163BA

... and 'YES' I do speak yugoslavian

that asus drive is really a Pioneer DVR-109

I never said it didn't. I said the Asus was the only one that supporter DVD-R DL.

Just a different format. There are DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL, just like there are DVD+Rs and DVD-Rs :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD-RAM

from my understanding, RAM works much like a hard-drive. the data isn't written sequentially, so there's no need for closing sessions. it works just like a floppy or a removable drive, you put it in, write/delete instantly, and get it out. no need for external programs. they were a joy to work with for backing up data, as they had auto-CRC checking, so nothing was ever corrupt. only thing was the speed issue, but i was using a 5 year old Apple G4 so i couldn't tell you the exact model, but the 5X the LG GSA-4163B does is quite enough (make that somewhat less, since it loses speed checking for consistency).

i'm really not sure why it lost interest, it really is/was a good format.

as far as DVD-R DL goes, i don't see anything worth a mention that DVD+R doesn't do with much higher hardware support. DVD+R will always be my choice for buying equipment, so i'll never have the need for -R. if there's any format that should be removed is that +- issue. not only is it confusing, but it's only there because of some weird corporate pickle. why should the end-user be forced to choose different formats when they all do the same thing?

Sounds great! I have a quick q: do all modern optical drives read DVD-RAMs? Or is it just for the LG ones?

Disadvantages of DVD-RAM

    * Type 2 discs do not always come in a case.

    * Most DVD recorders do not support DVD-RAM.

    * The medium is more expensive than DVD?RW.

    * DVD+RW can be written faster than DVD-RAM when writing large amounts of data.
