Dark Ride
My final conclusion: I'd get the LG burner if DVD-R DL\DVD+R DL is not that important, I mean what is this 'DL' used for ? Which specific media is being stored mostly on DL ? I basically just want to be able to copy games and movies, that's it. Btw, LG is cheaper than the ASUS burner and I have good expirience with LG drives. You can make direct ports of DVD movies on DL media, with no ripping, compressing, or recoding :D Also, since it fits 8.5GB, it makes for great backups! Bearded Kirklander
GAM said: NEC 3540A gives you the most bang for your buck these days.... Well - errrm - uhrmmm - : http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=2470&p=13 Quote We were really dissapointed in the NEC ND-3540A's performance when compared to drives like the BenQ DW1640, but hopefully their performance will improve as their BIOS matures. The only drive we saw that could write to the majority of discs and quickly at that was BenQ's DW1640. It had average performance on most of the benchmarks. but always had a successful read to go with the successful write. The only disc that it could not write to was the MKM A03 8x DVD+RW. Besides that single issue, the DW1640 has features to aid in successful writes, as well as bitsetting features to allow greater compatibility of the media to which it writes. The bitsetting utility can be downloaded from BenQ's website. Over these 6 DVDR units, we recommend the BenQ DW1640 for its performance and reliability in writing to various types of media. Expect this drive to start showing up on retail store shelves very soon. Newegg has the BenQ 1640 - $45.99 regular, $5.00 instant off right now, $40.99. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16827101651 It has Bit Setting native in the BIOS and Nero fully supports that feature. That way you can tag DVD+R movies as DVD-ROM, which is the same format retail movies ship in, so it should have the widest player compatibility possible. If there is one thing you take from this world on this day, besides world peace and all that stuff, is that the BenQ 1640 is Teh UbeR-OptIoNz :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/354228-dvd-burner-choices/page/2/#findComment-586329199 Share on other sites

Ravensworth
I have a Panasonic LF-D521 for writing DVD-RAM, and it has always worked perfectly. Burns DVD-R and DVD-RW very nicely also. They have a faster model out now that supports the plus formats also and possibly dual layer, but I haven't seen it available anywhere yet. One important point for me is that it accepts the cartridge type media. A lot of the other drives like LG do not. I use them for archival stuff mostly, very reliable. I've also got a Panasonic set-top DVD-Recorder that takes the cartridges so I use them as a VHS replacement. Just record a show, bring it to my computer and watch it (or burn it to a DVD-R for watching anywhere). BenQ is nice, I got one to replace my old CD-RW drive a few weeks ago. I wish I had waited though since they have the new one out now. Works very well though, not as quiet as some but good enough. :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/354228-dvd-burner-choices/page/2/#findComment-586334334 Share on other sites
