MS AntiSpyware will stay free...

AntiSpyware and OneCare Live

Today when I came in to the office, I was made aware of an issue which stated that a Microsoft Representative was quoted as saying Windows AntiSpyware would no longer be available for free.

The statement quoted in many forums is not true.

As we have been saying since day one, Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware will be available at no charge to licensed users of Windows. Users who validate their Windows install through WGA will be allowed to download the AntiSpyware beta, as well as the full standalone version of AntiSpyware when it releases to the web. This has not changed since Bill Gates announced this information at the RSA conference in February. The enterprise version of Windows AntiSpyware is targeted to companies who want to centrally manage their Windows AntiSpyware infrastructure. The enterprise version of Windows AntiSpyware will be available for a cost (which has not been determined yet).  For users who want more services including AntiVirus, computer backup, and AntiSpyware we will be offering Windows OneCare live. Windows OneCare Live is currently in beta, but when it releases to the web it will be available to users with a cost.

There are many exciting security offerings coming from Microsoft over the next year and I am just glad they let me blog about these exciting things happening at Microsoft!

did you even read the article?

the main page says that it will not be updated and not released for free, but this contradicts that article. This came from an official source.

That was based on an assumption that was derived from misinformation. This has cleared it up so I'd assume that if they were continuing the project, it will remain supported.

I'm tempted to say it too.  It's funny how misinformation spreads like wildfire.  Something was quoted, taken out of context, and then twisted and word got out.  Great.

I agree with you on that. The sniplet did not say Antispyware wont be free. It just did not state its future.

Its funny how people like to assume.

What's even worse is that quote was so out of context from the rest of the chat. If the person who posted it bothered to also post the questions asked/answered above and below it you would realize that they never had any intention of getting rid of it. This story was misquoted from the beginning and was one big blunder. :p

The questions were in no order and the ones before and after it had nothing to do with that particular question. I was in that chat last night and there was no order to the questions being answered. If you've ever been in an MS beta chat, you would/should know this.

I was in the chat last night. And the questions that came after it did actually pertain to the samething. If I remember right your screen name on the chat was bangbang023|neowin.

I am not looking for a ****ing contest, just saying that people need to be more careful before they post stuff like this. It's un-confirmed blurbs like that one that start stories running though the internet and are most likely never true.

Man, I wish I had a log of the chat, but no, the questions that came right after that statement were not directly pertaining to it because I was the one to verify its credibility and made sure it wasn't clarified directly after.

I'm actually discouraged that microsoft is pushing more and more into our daily lives with more software... Personally if i can get an app other than a MS name brand i will. I prefer to keep my system diverse in the apps i use. This way I can say i didn't encourage a monopoly by buying or using freeware of one name brand.
