Increase Preformance with WB 4.6?

Recommended Posts

Sorry but WB is long removed here, and it's too much work to get it again and wait a few hours for a memory leak to screenshot :hmmm: If that means I fold, so be it :ermm: Point is though, it slew my system down. Every version. And it may not be everyone else's case, but I'm certainly not alone either..

If I were to screenshot it though, your screenshot isn't very fair to the claim it "never" goes above 1MB... That looks like a freshly booted system, taskman is like the only window open, and it's a very plain theme..

Okay, now you're just trolling. WindowBlinds does not leak memory. People run it for weeks and weeks. My work machines almost never get rebooted -- months of uptime at a time and WindowBlinds's process is using what you've been showin in the screenshots.

So at this point, you're just spreading FUD. If WindowBlinds had a memory leak, the forums would be full of posts about it.

I don't know if WindowBlinds slows down your computer or not. You may have some very unique setup or something. But anyone who's convince WindowBlinds is slowing down their windows shouldn't be using msstyles either since they DEFINITELY slow down the computer.

After around WindowBlinds 4.21, I stopped using msstyles completely because the sluggishness, particularly on resizing windows, was something I noticed more and more. Now, if I can't import an msstyle, I don't use it. Obviously I'm biased but that doesn't make what I say untrue.

Here's my screenie. WindowBlinds is the first thing I install whenever I do a clean install. My computer just isn't the same without it!

I was going to post that on my Machine Window Blinds was slower than msstyles, but then I enabled Hyperpaint, and I can see the difference is Huge. The speed boost is awesome, I am going to keep Windowblinds for now instead of uxtheme.

What theme are you using?

I am guessing it is one of KoL's old panther themes?

You are also using styler? You do know that styler is redundent when using WB, since WB skins the explorer buttons.

Any chance of getting a ss of your full task manager showing all the processes? Maybe then I can help you pin point which program might be making WB spike mem useage.

styler actually does a much better job of changing the explorer buttons, becuase it actually changes the button placements (by providing its own skinned toolbar with simlilar functionality).

I've actually been wishing for this for ages in WB :)

To get back on topic, I've used windowblinds for ages, and I certainly don't see any memory leak or bad performance. I tell a lie, I have, but only when my hyperpaint settings weren't right. I turned on hyperpaint to half way and it works fine (when it was up on full it got laggy. Try that!).

^ I agree with him on the toolbar thing. I've never been too fond of Windowblinds' way of skinning the toolbar. Programs like Y'z Toolbar and Styler are more powerful.

But, I still stick with Windowblinds' method because Y'z is problematic and Styler is more money to dish out, and another program to have running.

edit: oh, and one more thing to point out about Windowblinds vs. msstyles. Look in the screenshot above, and you'll see that Styler uses more resources than WB. Also, from experience, I can say that Y'z Toolbar uses more system overhead than WB. So, I love it when msstyle users don't use WB because it's "bloated", yet still run some program like Y'z Toolbar or Styler in addition to the bloated Windows theme service. Oh well...

And yet every story on gaming and WindowBlinds where they conducted official benchmarks shows WindowBlinds is faster for gamers than msstyles.  ExtremeTech, FileFront, and numberous others over the years have benched this.

I think, as others have mentioned, you have the placebo effect going.

Tell that to my FPS display in CS:S. It's not just my imagination. I did say "a few" meaning not something huge, but just enough to bother those of us with OCD for it. This entire time, I've said it's been my experience and have said that WB works wonders for other people. I wouldn't post a quote about framerate unless I had the actual numerical proof to show me that there was a small drop.

Then I think we deserve that proof, why don't you post the numbers and screens to prove it if you're going to make a such a pronouncement.

For the love of.....why does me saying I lose *a few* fps get someone all up in a tilly. If I feel like installing WB again, I'll take the shot otherwise, I'm not going to be bothered.\

Why would I lie? Why would someone who's defended WB in the past, used WB and recommended it to people lie about, literally, 5fps or so? To most people, it wouldn't matter. Most people, from what I've been told here, get an fps boost. For whatever reason it doesn't happen for me. That's all. One case out of how many? The topic came up and I mentioned how my personal experience showed a small drop. I'm not bashing it or saying no one should use WB, I'm simply stating my experience. If you don't want to believe me, that's fine. I'm not going to be worried about it.

WindowBlinds and uxtheme work the same.  WindowBlinds doesn't paint on top of the classic UI.  Neither does msstyles.  It never has.

In the case of WindowBlinds, wblind.dll intercepts paint calls and where it has an alternative, it takes care of it.  Otherwise the classic painting is allowed.  In either case, only one pass is done.

In the case of msstyles, uxtheme.dll intercepts the paint calls and where it has an altenrative, it takes care of it. Otherwise, the classic painting is allowed. In either case, only one pass is done.

...OOOHHHHH... ok..all this time and I thought it painted over classic. Its still improved by leaps and bounds since I've use it last in '00 and '01.

Lol and that's a very good thing. I remember this one big green skin I used way back when. Combined with windows 98, it was like a time bomb. The software definitely has come a loooooong way from the old days.

One thing, lot of people mention that styler and Y'z toolbar skins the toolbar icons "better" than Windows Blinds. How? Last time I tryed Y'z toolbar it didn't support 32bit icons with alpha channel.

As it's been said of styler, it can alter the position of the buttons, apparently. I don't use it, so I couldn't tell you for sure, but it seems to have a few extra features in that regard.

do you mean objectbar or objectdock? ObjectDock murders my games, so I launch them from a batch file that shuts down object dock, runs my game, and then restarts OD once the game is exited.

Also remember that with any skin, WB or msstyle, the more gfx intense it, the memory it will use.

So say the theme I use, extensis, which is a nice minimal theme only takes about 440K. But when you load a gfx intense theme such KoL's 5203 longhorn or the MyHomestead theme it will cause wbload to go up. In the grand scheme of things though wbload at 2.5 MB is still very low compared to the default XP engine that can take aware from 5-15 depending on the persons computer setup.

What I don't get is why people fret over 2MB anyways when most computers come standard now with 512.

Also hyperpaint only works on gfx cards that support hardware acceleration. On my old laptop, the p3 700 doesn't support hyperpaint, but I don't get a performane hit at all.
