Google's Jabber Server Works

Recommended Posts

The Google Jabber server is **SORTA** up and running. I am currently logged in with my Google/Gmail username and password (no need to register).

If anyone else can login, add me:

alienvenom@gmail.com or something like that. (hopefully they wont be using the @gmail.com for long)

From Gaim system log:

---- +++ alienvenom@talk.google.com/Gaim signed on @ 2005-08-23 11:48:34 ----

---- +++ alienvenom@talk.google.com/Gaim signed off @ 2005-08-23 11:48:42 ----

Not sure what's going on. :-\

Their PLAIN authentication mechanism fails. And it lists an X-GOOGLE-TOKEN mechanism, too. That's the proprietary one I mentioned before. The thing is, their server reports as gmail.com and what clients send back is username@talk.google.com. Maybe that's the breaking point, I try playing around with the hosts file for a bit.

What's really the point of having another IM service if everyone is going to use multi-platform IM clients? :huh:

(*cough* Would make sense if a Google IM client was or could support multi-platforms through plug-ins, with Jabber as default built-in client)

It definitely seems modified. If the server is expecting my client to send some "commands" after its succssfully logged, that might be why it disconnected me a few seconds later.

I tried to add a Jabber user on another jabber server to my buddy list but by the time I saved it, I was already disconnected.

I don't know if anyone saw this news, but, I'm sure it's official now:

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Google reportedly plans to launch an instant messaging program as early as this week, in a challenge to America Online, Yahoo and Microsoft.

ADVERTISEMENT

"Google Talk" will allow computer users to chat with their keyboards and allow users with headsets to have voice conversations with other computer users with headsets, according to the Los Angeles Times, citing unnamed sources.

The move comes as Google, the leader in Internet search, tries to broaden its offerings and draw more users to its sites to draw more from its online advertising efforts.

On Monday, Google announced a new program giving users customized Web pages in a desktop window, similar to offerings from Yahoo and Microsoft.

The free program called "Sidebar" offers personalized information including e-mail, news, weather, photos, stocks or other content in a small vertical window on the side of a user's screen.

A year after its public stock offering, Google last week said it would sell more than 14 million additional shares in a secondary offering that could raise four billion dollars.
