Question

   My dad has set Norton GoBack to restore the computer every night therefore getting rid of things I did the previous day...I know you can restore what you did but I don't see the point of having to ask my dad to restore things I have lost...It sounds pathetic but I was wondering if anyone else hates this piece of software.

I use to trust Norton but now it's just ****

Mentor: LOOK - everyone has answered you. The product is doing what your dad has set it to do. The product is not at fault, but the settings that your dad has applied are massively over the top.

Speak to him, nobody here can really help any further than this!

I agree. The oinly instance I've ever seen where nightly restoration is needed is in the classroom, where we'd want the computers back to their original state for the next group of students. But even then it's far easier to do a batch image restore from the server.

Otherwise, you just need a good backup program for your personal files and a disk imaging program to recover from a complete system crash.

XP's default System Restore has so far been pretty reliable for me if I just need to recover from a crap program that's messed me up, like a certain codec pack I installed a couple of weeks ago. But that's only because I was too lazy to install it via Ashampoo Uninstaller.

The problem is that Symantic has a huge advertising budget that allows them to net the newbies who read PC Mag and PC World, scaring them into thinking they need all that unnecessary crap.

This whole thread is wrong, you should be mad at your dad, Norton is doing what he set it to. Go talk to him about it, what is a thread + poll going to do but waste time.

the thread + poll is me trying to find out who else hates this product and others by Norton

Norton GoBack is Great!

Im using Norton System Works Premier Edition 2005 and It is Fantastic!

Everytime i have a Problem with Windows etc, use Norton Goback and It is Fixed!

Yeah. System Restore sucks. The first thing I do is disable it.

yes you are right, i hate it because it's not working for me, but every night is a bit extreme, i doubt my dad knows since he never goes on this computer since he put GoBack on, just uses his laptop now [fishy]

While I agree that Mentor666 could have done a better job in how he posed his issue, and in fact it does appear that the fault in this case isn't the software, I disagree that this thread is a waste of time. Isn't discussion what forums are for? This one seems to be pretty lively and informative, imho.

For one thing, it's interesting how many Neowin members (who tend to be a bit more informed than the average user) don't like Symantic, considering the popularity of their products. For another, I've learned about the Acronis products, which seem to be viable alternatives to Symantic's products.

Personally, if I don't find a thread useful to me I just move on to the next one. It's not like it's hurting anything, right?

Mentor666, please don't take this the wrong way, but perhaps in the future you might just state the problem and ask for help, rather than pointing a finger until you know for sure where the fault lies. I'm not trying to moderate you, just trying to help you get your answers faster so you can get back up and running.

Peace :)

turn off the PC at night so the restore doesnt happen :D

Im not the type of person to go behind someones back (because its not your computer) but making this shortcut:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 3600

will shut down the computer in an hour (3600 seconds = 1 hour), add more time by changing the 3600 value if you want to be sneeky :ninja:

but the best way is still talking to your dad

The two worst things i can think of is when 1) I tried customizing my computers theme entirely and it messed up the .dll's so i had to re-install XP and this resulted in all my dad's work being wiped.  2) Trying to install iPodLinux onto my iPod...i didnt back everything up and i didnt know my iPod was 4generation...this brought bad news AGAIN...it wiped ALL my COURSEWORK off my iPod...and i had to back up the firmware...if i hadnt backed the firmware i dont know where i would be right now.
