mujjuman
hi all. when i first installed winxp pro, which was last week, it booted up quick. by the boot screen, i mean the screen that has the winxp logo with the blue bars going across the screen. well at first, it used to boot up after 2 scrolls, but hten slowly and slowly it started to boot after 5 scrolls... why is that and how is this fixed? thanks.... btw, it went up in increments. for example, first it booted after 2 scrolls, then after 2.5, then 3, then 3.5, and so on up to 5 scrolls (right now) anyway, i hope you guys know what im talking about
+unabatedshagie Subscriber¹ Posted September 8, 2005 Subscriber¹ Share Posted September 8, 2005 Why - because you have installed programs which have added services which start up when windows boot (av, firewall etc) To fix it - the depends, you can spend a while looking through services.msc and checking if any services in there are not needed. mujjuman
LN_BuLL, im talking about the bootscreen, the "NTLoader" where the windows xp logo is on a black background and there are 3 blue or green boxes that scroll from left to right. i have already taken care of the services, etc. there is nothing in my startup other than zonealarm, av, and gnotify, and taskmgr. the problem is how fast the windows xp bootscreen finishes loading. it takes ever LONGER now, taking 7 scrolls. if you STILL dont know wth im talking about, restart your windows xp comp, and after the BIOS boot, u will see the windows xp bootscreen. count how many times it scrolls. ive also installed xp on a test machine, and it does the same thing. initially, it loads super fast, taking only 3 scrolls, now it takes 8 scrolls (the test machine is slower than my normal comp)

xMorpheousx416
Change this key in the registry: HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters Look for: EnablePrefetcher Right click, Modify and change the 3 to a 2. This will keep Windows from prefetching programs and only prefetch system files during startup. Your "scrolling" will most likely not go anymore than about 3 times. mujjuman
hmm, thanks Morpheous, ill check into that now. oh btw, what is the purpse of prefetch?
Unimatrix Xero
i thought that Prefetcher was just a myth?? :s
califsp484
I'm pretty sure the prefetch is used by windows to "prefetch" the programs we use the most by organizing them to go at the beginning of the hard drive partition, and it is supposed to speed up the boot process. Who knows... Check Here @ PCMag
mujjuman
i dont get it, if it is supposed to speed up boot, why should i delete it? [EDIT] i deleted it and now i get 4 scrolls...
k22
if you have peripherals connected (ex. ipod) sometimes and other times not then it can increase boot times.
mujjuman
UPDATE: i deleted everything in the Prefetch folder, and now it boot with 2.5 scrolls! thanks Morpheous. but then ultimately i found my programs start a bit slow, so i guess to sacrifice boot time for 5 seconds so that your programs run faster is better off in the long run.
