I work for a smallish (700-user) government agency. The problem with such a radical change in interface (at least from MS perspetive) is that migrating to OpenOffice is now not only cheaper, but will be easier for our users as well.

Really? What about the support options? What about deployment issues?

And do you really think

will be easier to understand for the user than Office 12?

I'm a big fan of open source software, however you don't have the a corporation backing it therefore its very hard to use on a commercial setting.

deployment is a scripted install either way. we haven't called MS in 10 years, so support is a non issue.

That looks a lot more like office 2000 (what we still use) than those shots on page 1.

we use open source development tools (mostly) and find they are much easier to use because they are open source.

it's possible that the ribbon thing will be a joy to use, but I know that it looks different enough that it would confuse a significant portion of our users.

I was commenting on the "extensive research" result that differently-shaped buttons made them easier to recognize. You'd have known that if you'd taken the time to read what I quoted.

Yes, you stated it is not easier for you, however you have not yet used Office 12.

It's my experience that differently-shaped buttons are not easier to recognize/use than uniformly-shaped buttons.

Care to give an example on what you specfically used that was similar to what Office 12 is doing?

And btw, it's differently-shaped ICONS, not buttons. The buttons are different SIZES.

Now that I think about it, I don't remember the name of whatever creation I used with differently-shaped icons/buttons...but I do remember that it was very, very annoying and hard to use.

Well I hope you'll at least give Office 12 a fair try when it's out before putting it down.

Do we know if there are any Microsoft employees with the initials VCV? Joke!

The new Office 12 interface looks interesting, but there seems to be a lot of wasted space in the topbar, space I would personally prefer for my document!

I'm a fan of OO, I use it at University when I'm working on linux boxes.

Dougal.

I wish I worked for Microsoft. The closest I've been is when I took a vacation to a town near Redmond last year and one of my friends out there does work for them.
