MS 'unsurprised' by a 2007 launch for PS3

Xbox UK boss Neil Thompson has confirmed that he is confident Microsoft will have a strong head start in the next-gen console battle, suggesting that the PS3 might not launch until spring 2007.

?I?ll be happy to compete whenever they turn up, but I wouldn?t be surprised if that?s not until spring 07,? he told trade magazine MCV.

?If they hit Xmas 06, then maybe it?ll be a very thin launch; a launch in name only.?

So far Sony has only hinted that the next-generation PlayStation will hit the market in spring 2006, and it seems unlikely that the company will follow in the footsteps of Microsoft and attempt a global launch. They're more likely to follow the traditional model and launch in Japan first, followed by North American and then PAL territories.

yeh for ppl who want to get both, this is a good thing really, but it does mean that game companys like rockstar might lean towards the xbox instead of giving sony exclusives, i guess that is a good thing too. I only bought my PS2 for the exclusive release dates on GTA titles.

Well I think Microsoft will get a head start in this generation of console wars. Sony's best tactic would be to DELAY the launch of the PS3 until late 2007, and then ship it in time for the holiday season. This would make the PS3 look like an even newer console than the 360 to the average consumer, and give people sufficient time to get bored of it.

The worst thing Sony could do is release the PS3 a few months after the XBox, when everybody will want to spend their money on XBox games, rather than *another* new console.

ya because sony is known for that. god what a piece of bullsh*t

i'm surprised he randomly chose spring 2007 rather than fall 2010. he doesn't have any inside information on when it's coming out...no better than the rest of us

If MS was smart, theyd release halo 'x' about a month before the PS3, then cut prices on everything Xbox 360 on the day (just like PS2 did for Xbox).

And sony seems to be in trouble... layoffs (10,000-20,000 people leaving the company by 2006 is a big number...) and nobody mention the upcoming blu-ray/hi-def DVD wars... this could be the beginning of the end

If I was Sony, I would be worried.

Even if they make Xmas 06, that gives Xbox over a year head start. The Xbox games will into the second generation and will look amazing compared to the launch titles.

Assuming that 360 and PS3 have similar specs (as they do at present), Sony is going to have to pull numerous rabbits out their collective asses to have games that look as good as the 2nd gen xbox games.

As a gamer, I can't wait to see what happens.

look what happened to sega when they got in first with the dreamcast......

Im not saying this would happen, but just because they are first onto the next gen market don't mean they will do better.

Sega was pretty much broke and couldn't wage an aggressive response to the introduction of the PS2. Lets also not forget the rep Sega earned themselves with the crap they released after the Genesis. The Saturn was awsome if you were into imports, but thats it. MS has earned some street cred and they're in it for the long haul.

You have to an idiot to think that the PS3 will fall to 2007. There is just no way Sony could survive if that were to happen. They were at least smart enough to wait for a next gen disc drive, but they wont wait any longer. 2006 is the year, period.

sony have messed up badly as a company over the last few years. they need the ps3 next year. and howard stringer is depending on it reducing sony's losses.

i am worried that, although it may come out in Japan and the US in 2006, Europe may get it very late in 2006.

A PS3 launch in 2007 would be great. Personally, I don't mind investing in each system as long as I know they will be moderately prosperous (and yes, I would say this applies to the GameCube). That last thing I want is to pay 400 bones on the 360 and then have PS3 kick its **** out 5 months later (a la Dreamcast once the PS2 came out)
