yayaba
In fact, why is every Apple OS released always over $100? That's almost worse than what MS did with WinMe. Can't they just put out a patch or something? I don't even own a Mac so it doesn't really matter to me =p. But ... damn, $120 just for some product upgrades. What a rip. Timan Veteran Posted July 22, 2002 Veteran Share Posted July 22, 2002 one thing why do you care then? please, u dont need to make a thread like this, its 130 because its worth 130$, i'm going to pay that 130$ so i dont need to bitch about it, and no not every apple os is over 100$! dont even compare apple to ms thats just plain ***! sick of all these macish flames. buy a mac or buy a cup of stfu :) ACK!!! Sick of these threads! Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/39170-why-is-osx-102-120/#findComment-393509 Share on other sites
KiwiNZ
Why is it $120 ? Easy, its the price they want to charge in order to provide a payback on the product and thus a return on investment to the Stockholders. No return on investment = no investment =no new products Simple really. yayaba
Whoa, whoa, whoa Timan. Calm down. I never flamed the MacOS. My point was the actual price of the OS itself. You don't slightly think that $120 is too much for a few new programs and a couple new icons? Money must grow on trees for you then... And when did Apple ever release an OS that was under $99? (I'm not acting arrogant on this, just that I never noticed they did). They're like all other OS companies. They're like all other OS companies. sorry for snapping just this week there have been a ****load of mac flamish type threads and i just got sick of it. sorry :( but this is a BIG upgrade i mean i installed jaguar build by build on my imac and i notice a BIG i mean BIG!!! Speed increase. thats one of teh reasons its a pay upgrade. also apple isn't doing to good in the comp market right now so they need $$$ which is normal. also icons ;) come on no one cares about those :p the new little apps are nice, i used sherlock 3 today to buy movie tickets! thats right i went out of the house and payed to go see a movie. so this update is worth it. and there are plenty of os patches that are free. hope that made sense :s also its been 18 months since the last big update. that right there is enough time for a whole new os. it maybe alot of money but its worth it! yayaba
Well, if the speed upgrade is there, then I guess maybe =p. I dunno... wouldn't it be more logical to just name it OSX 11 then? Cause I mean... it's a 0.1 difference that costs $100. Arg, maybe I'm just too technical then =p. Timan Veteran Posted July 22, 2002 Veteran Share Posted July 22, 2002 well most people thought it was going to be called os 10.5 but just .2 so that means there is still alot in store for os 10, i really can't wait till tehy drop aqua ;) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/39170-why-is-osx-102-120/#findComment-393547 Share on other sites

The difference between XP and 2000 was 0.1 and look how much XP costs. Still, I don't think apple should be charging 129$ for 10.2, a more reasonable price (20-40$) would be appropriate. Even Microsoft doesn't charge for updates! I know a lot of you will say that 10.2 is more than an update, but it is an update, nothing less, nothing more. Only if you purchase a Mac after July 17th And before you trolls make pathetic threads like this, perhaps you should read up a little. First of all there are all the visible differences, iChat, iCal, iSync etc then there are the new technologies like rendezvous, then there is the massive amount of under the hood upgrade, most of it based on upgrades made in the unix world in the past years. Things like cups for printing (which has been in the unix field for a long time I believe), upgrade to the bsd core, and upgrades to all the other unix elements. Then there's quartz extreme, this is so revolutionary that Microsoft isn't integrating it at the core OS level until longhorn is shipped. Quartz exteme passes a lot of the GUI functions to the graphics card such as all the fancy animations and transparencies. This is all rendered by OpenGL built into the OS and passed on to the graphics card, leaving the CPU for everything else. MS isn't doing this until DX9 (or perhaps 10) is integrated with longhorn, so it's a major addition. Then there's the massive increase of hardware support such as twain, cups for printing and built in midi support. All of these features are a hell of a lot more then what 98 -> 98SE was and 98SE -> ME was but MS charged full price for those. Then of course there's 2k to XP, having used both OS's at both home and a work environment I would gladly stick my head on the line and say the upgrade from 10.1 to 10.2 is bigger then 2k to XP. I'm sure many would agree. Before people come trolling and making stupid threads like this, perhaps they shoiuld do a little research. Maybe I should start one asking why Microsoft deems it necessary to charge me ?240 ($377!) for the full version of Windows XP (presuming I'm not entitled to any discounts and I haven't got the brains to buy the OEM version) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/39170-why-is-osx-102-120/#findComment-393693 Share on other sites

Well from 17th to the 24th, you need to pay $20 dollars for shipping or see if your local comp store will give you an upgrade CD. Once jag is released they will start preinstalling it on macs. Amadeke
Schokz, I guess all programs on your PC are paid, lol I am not justifying warez, but it made M$ big. If they continue the .NET strategie, things as Linux will grow. Software developers make you pay to correct the mistakes they made or for things they "forgot", cool eh. KiwiNZ
I must read a 100 posts a week that say something along the lines , this software is a rippof , this company shouldnt be charging us , we should get this for free , this company is greedy that company asks to much. So many seem to think because its to do with the IT industry then it should be free. I dont hear this Ferarri is too expensive , this Chevy should be free. This house should be half the price. Its simple if you want innovation , invention development you have to pay for . Simple investers want returns , how many of you bleating have Pension plans ? you are investers and want big returns to retire on right ? this is all facts life. Accept if you want it pay for it , Margins are bloody low in the industry , right now I am lucky to get 2 - 3% , think of it I would be better off liquidating , laying of my staff , putting the money in the bank, it would give me a better return on investment. Simple if you cant afford a computer , take up knitting. Sorry to blast off , but it really gets up my nose this bull-----t about pricing and there is the whole crap story " I cant afford Windows XP so I will steal it " but thats another story Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/39170-why-is-osx-102-120/#findComment-393717 Share on other sites

I agree that the upgrade from 10.1>10.2 is a bigger difference than Win 2k>XP XP is just 2k slapped with a new GUI and prettier colors that was aimed at home users. 10.2 comes with a lot of better features, improvments on speed and stability, and a lot of under the hood stuff like you said.
