crimsonhead
No offense, but why would M$ radically change the start menu like this? Beta 2 usually shows pretty much the final gui. And beta 2 is coming about a month from now. You really think the graphics guys are gonna redesign the whole thing? And btw the star should be a "quick shutdown" button that shuts down and powers off in 3 seconds. Edited November 4, 2005 by crimsonhead Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/393717-redesigned-windows-vista-start-menu-mockup/page/2/#findComment-586767648 Share on other sites

Dasgooch
No and I didn't state that I did. But in your comment you kind of made my point for me. Yes Beta 2 is right around the corner and it typically is pretty final as far as look and feel of the OS. So if that is true why would they implement a completely new start menu experiance? One thing about Microsoft is they don't like to go and completely re-invent the wheel everytime. They just slightly alter it to not alienate their customer base, basically so everything is familiar to someone who is not a power user that likes to know how everything works. Jazket
I get what Dasgoosh mean, and believe me the "Windows Vista Team" is not ONE GUY - BUT I AM. You should know that they all work together to make the best out of a product. Second, It is not like my input WILL EVER count on a Product made at Microsoft. Its the freaking biggest company and there are many graphic designers (more than hundreds)... So you should at least point that what I did really is good, only because the fact that I'm my own Windows Vista Team, and not dozens of graphic designers and software engineers all togheter :) I also appreciate your comment, as I made this just to let everyone know how would "I" make the Start Menu look like, in an Operanting System with the capabilities to have "this" what I created, AND MUCH MORE... Microsoft first started working on Longhorn around "2001" - It's been Four Years of hard work, in a team of maybe more than a hundred programmers, and it is not like they are going to change their work of Four Years, with my work of "5 hours yesterday night"... ;) Edited November 4, 2005 by Jazket Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/393717-redesigned-windows-vista-start-menu-mockup/page/2/#findComment-586767685 Share on other sites
GrymmWolf
I like it. Looks very useful as long as I can decide on what is "Pinned" to the various menus. :D Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/393717-redesigned-windows-vista-start-menu-mockup/page/2/#findComment-586767711 Share on other sites
Bant Veteran Posted November 4, 2005 Veteran Share Posted November 4, 2005 sorry dude, you've made it more complicated and less useable than it currently is. the presentation doesnt flow with the aero concept at all. its not clear, its not quick. it requires more clicks and more waiting than the current start menu. The Jorge
It definetly looks nice but I don't think I could get used to something like this. As a Windows user since Windows 95, I have grown accustomed to the workflow and layout of the OS and changing it this drastically would just annoy me, personally. Then again, I said the same thing when the new Start Menu was introduced with Windows XP. :p Appreciate the effort. I would take the criticisms here as great feedback; you can go back to the drawing board and rethink the current design. The thing about Start menu presently is, it needs to be toned down, even the Windows Team realizes that, thats why they are using the List view for common items such as Computer, Network, Documents etc..., when hovered over, you see the respective icon at the top of the menu, and if you can read this shouldn't be a problem. As for your concept, two words come to mind, overwhelming and jumbo. I like subtle and simple which makes it inviting. If you look at the current iteration of the Start Menu in My Webpageyou can see that the Windows Team has achieved that. Basically you are getting the best of both worlds by having something thats graphically rich, simple and appealing. If you play with the current start menu in recent builds of Vista, you will also notice the theme is about consolidation, the new all programs with hierarchy navigation through program groups and just overall design, the most common features are just all there. With your Start Menu, there is just too much interaction required. I love your enthusiasm for graphical design. Slimy
very nice, i suggest you add a poll and get people to vote, maybe, just maybe ms will listen :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/393717-redesigned-windows-vista-start-menu-mockup/page/2/#findComment-586767978 Share on other sites
Xero
Looks great man. I love the concept, Maybe a little more work on the graphical end, I'd love to make my own mockup slightly modified than yours, I miss the frequently used applications list. Jazket
Thanks mr. Dee; "lol at the -Operanting- thingie" and yes I took all the critism as a good feedback, whether it was good or bad. Everyone thinkgs different. And of course I'm going to the dashboard tonight again :) Slimy, thanks for the advice but as I said before, somewhere I can't remember where lol, I am not trying to change Ms's work on Vista; this is just a concept of what I would like the Start Menu to look like, all cause Windows Vista is a really inpressive OS and should have inpressive features as well... but again, workflow and design come along so you can't work with one and leave the other outside... Also i'm not planning to do a Poll cause there is no way Microsoft could hold on a poll of this to decide wether they should use it or not. This is NOT being used by Microsoft. It's just a Mockup, a creation of my own, the way I express myself, and I Appreciate so much that most of you like the things I do :p (If you like a good coffee cup in the morning, then thats something I would discuss with a Poll :shifty: ) Edited November 4, 2005 by Jazket Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/393717-redesigned-windows-vista-start-menu-mockup/page/2/#findComment-586768028 Share on other sites
EGM92
Curious, is it actually possible to design a working startmenu like that? It looks REALLY nice. It would take a bit getting used to but it looks really nice. I'd use it for sure! Jazket
don't worry I already thought of it... Might end up doing something similar in a near future... as I'm starting to program under WinFX... ;) let's wait till all the technology is up and running at is best, and Vista ships at its final version, then we might get a start menu like this one :p Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/393717-redesigned-windows-vista-start-menu-mockup/page/2/#findComment-586768042 Share on other sites

The new program tree is the same as it is in vista. And the quicklaunch on here wouldnt help you save time. Am i missing something? .Neo
The drawer thing isn't really a succes. Apple used to use it throughout Mac OS X but nowadays it seems to be dying out in Mac OS X 10.4. A lot of people experience it as annoying and rather have something that's always there.
