ATI Officially releases Catalyst 5.11!

Before I re-formatted I always used to have problems if I didn't uninstall.? Now I don't have a problem.? I don't think you have to uninstall everytime.? Maybe every other build or if it's a major upgrade.? I see no reason to uninstall first every time.

Excellent.. thanks. The reason I ask is because I installed the 5.9 drivers on top of the old 5.8 and haven't ever had any issues. This was something I couldn't do when I had an nVidia ca:happy:ppy:

I have installed them, but I doubt they'll do much for my 9800 Pro. What is faster, the X1800 or the 7800 GTX?

They're both roughly the same, though the X1800s are faster when you turn on AA. They also have more features.

One strange thing I wound up with after installing these is when I change my visual style instead of taking the usual 5 seconds or so it takes like 30 seconds for the new style to take affect.

Feeling that this might just be one of many quirky things I rolled the driver back. But guess what? Still had the same problem.

So I had to restore a TrueImage image I made this morning. No more problem.

Think I'll ride this release out for awhile. :-)

what are the advantages of using the catalyst control center over just the drivers?

586797779

No performance advantages or anything like that, but the CCC does include one extra option that is not in the regular Control Panel: you can change the Catalyst A.I. option from Off, Low, or High. With the regular Control Panel drivers, the default (and un-changable) option is Low. Here are the differences:

High: Specific PC Game optimizations, only trilinear filtering on first pass when ansiotropic filtering is enabled, bilinear filtering on all other passes.

Low: Only trilinear filtering on first pass when ansiotropic filtering is enabled, bilinear filtering on all other passes.

Off: Full trilinear filtering on all passes when ansiotropic filtering is enabled (best quality obviously).

If you have a high-end ATI card, it is actually nice to turn Catalyst A.I. off and get the best image quality. If you don't want to install CCC (and who does?), you can still turn Catalyst A.I. off using ATITool (a free tool usually used for overclocking ATI cards).

not sure about Your explaining of this as You can affect these settings by changing typical filtering options already...

also even AI low includes specific game optimizations ...

i'm sorry but this was "late" reaction to something posted 3 pages backward (post count jumped way too fast since i got opened this forum page) ...

who needs them when there exist ATT :) right ?

and the stupid download verifcation thing for the mobilty drivers says that my notebook it not compatable with the drivers again!

looks like i shall have to go hunting for a full download of the mobilty drivers again

and just like with 5.9 and 5.10 they will proably work fine again

Usless crappy detection utility

There is no reason ever to turn CatAI off.  It provides many optimizations that do not affect image quality.  Turning it off only lowers your framerate.

586798202

It lowers your framerate because you are getting a higher level of texture clarity. ATI explained everything I just said when Catalyst A.I. was first released.

No, you can't. You can only change the Mip-map and texture quality (which are different than what I am talking about). Also, Catalyst A.I. on Low does not include specific game optimizations, only when set on High mode (which is the default for CCC I believe).

of course You can ... just use ATT :)

anyway i stand behind that Catalyst AI low include game specific optimizations (as typical example we can take issues with FEAR where Catalyst AI low uses "tweak" for SP/MP demo and affects in negative way retail version... so if you want increase your fps in FEAR rename executable to e.g. fear1.exe)

AI High uses more "agressive" optimizations ...

Actually, I had this same problem when I installed Catalyst 5.11 on my machine. However, it appears it is a problem with the ATI Uninstall All program with Catalyst 5.10; not anything to do with Catalyst 5.11.

To fix the problem, after you install Catalyst 5.11, use ATI's Uninstall All program. Reboot. After the reboot, delete the ATI Technologies folder in Program Files. Then, go into your system32 folder under WINDOWS, and delete every file that starts with "ati." Reboot again. By the way, after each reboot, make sure to stop Windows from trying to install drivers for your video card. Now, after you have done all of that, re-install Catalyst 5.11. Reboot (yes, again). Catalyst 5.11 should be installed correctly now and your slowdown problem in the Windows XP desktop should be gone.
