A. PLATFORMS AND WINDOWS VERSIONS SUPPORTED

============================================

Diskeeper runs on the Intel[R] x86 platform (including compatible

CPUs from other manufacturers) running Windows Server[TM] 2003,

Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT[R] 4.0, Windows Me, or

Windows 98.

The Windows versions supported vary by Diskeeper edition.

See the Table of Supported Operating Systems later in this

document for a chart of the different Diskeeper editions and

the Windows versions each supports.

Note that x64 versions of Diskeeper will only install on x64

editions of Windows.

B. OVERVIEW OF DISKEEPER 10.0

==============================

Breakthrough I-FAAST[TM] Technology

-------------------------------------

Intelligent File Access Acceleration Sequencing Technology

(I-FAAST) improves file access and creation by up to 80% (average

10%-20%). This is the first industry implementation of ?Disk

Performance Calibration?, the modern evolution of the outdated

and inconclusive disk optimization strategies of the past.

When I-FAAST is enabled, Diskeeper runs specially-engineered

benchmarks on your disk volumes to learn their performance

characteristics. Diskeeper then transparently monitors volumes

for file access frequency on an ongoing basis in to determine

which files are requested most often. Special analysis techniques

prevent Diskeeper from being ?fooled? by files that have been

recently accessed.

Using newly-developed technology, Diskeeper sequences the files

to take best advantage of both the logical characteristics and

physical characteristics of the volume. The sequencing process

is integrated with background defragmentation, so it's virtually

transparent to you.

I-FAAST intelligence allows Diskeeper to adapt to changing

situations-?so if the demands on a given system change, Diskeeper

automatically adjusts its behavior accordingly.

This feature is included in Diskeeper Server Enterprise, Diskeeper

Server Standard, and Diskeeper Professional Premier edI/O Smart[TM] Enhancementsements

----------------------------

I/O Smart has been enhanced to completely eliminate performance

slows related to disk I/Os incurred by defragmentation.

I/O Smart technology actively ?listens? for I/O requests. During

a Diskeeper defragmentation job, if another application or process

needs access to the hard drive, Diskeeper intelligently pauses

defragmentation until the other program I/O requests are fulfilled.

Once that happens, Diskeeper gets the go-ahead to resume

defragmentation until another request comes along. Combined

with its high-speed engine, Diskeeper can easily defragment

using the ?spaces? between I/O requests, even on busy servers.

This feature is included in all DiskCore Defragmentation Engine Enhancementse Enhancements

------------------------------------------

Improvements to innovative Diskeeper technology provide enhanced

defragmentation in low free space conditions (even for very large

files) and unsurpassed free space consolidation. Further

advancements to ?comprehensive? defragmentation will consolidate

a volume?s free space into one or a small handful of chunks.

Here is example test comparison between Diskeeper 9 and Diskeeper

10 on a Windows XP Professional system (with severe file and free

space fragmentation, and 17% free space):

Diskeeper 9 Diskeeper 10

---------------------------------------------------------------

Number of excess (Before) 129,112 129,112

---------------------------------------------------------------

Virtual Memory Size 3,384 3,168

------------------------------------------Terabyte Volume Engine[TM] Improvementsine[TM] Improvements

---------------------------------------------

The new Terabyte Volume Engine, or TVE[TM], has improvements to

consolidate free space more thoroughly. The TVE is specially

designed for volumes with a large number of files. It is the

fastest and most resource-conservative defragmentation

technology ever developed. Also note the TVE now runs on

volumes as small as 60 GB, instead of the 100 GB limit in

Diskeeper 9.

Diskeeper users with large volumes benefit from faster

defragmentation, lower overhead and dramatically reduced

total cost of ownership (TCO).

Here are some sample TVE performance numbers:

On a terabyte | Standard Engine | TVE | Improvement

(1,000GB) | Engine Time | Time |

volume: | Hr:Min:Sec | Hr:Min:Sec |

------------------------------------------------------------------

250,000 files | 00:29:35 | 00:10:07 | 192%

500,000 files | 01:07:11 | 00:17:52 | 276%

1M files | 02:30:36 | 00:33:49 | 345%

2M files | 06:46:30 | 01:05:49 | 518%

This feature is included in Diskeeper ServerC. KNOWN ISSUES IN THIS RELEASESUES IN THIS RELEASE

================================

1. The Boot-Time Defragmentation and Frag Shield dialogs have

not yet been updated to reflect the new console style.

2. Group policy support has not yet been implemented for

I-FAAST.

3. Not all message dialogs have been updated to reflect the

new console style.

4. The I-FAAST engines do not yet support the "Efficiently

defragment large files" option.

5. An access violation can occur when restoring a volume while

Diskeeper is running.

6. The Boot-Time Defragmentation feature is currently visible,

but non-functional in the x64 versions of Diskeeper.

7. The Frag Shield paging file function can, in some cases, cause

the paging file to fragment, creating the need to run a

Boot-Time Defragmentation job to defragment the paging file.

Since the Boot-Time feature is not currently available in the

x64 versions of Diskeeper, it is recommended that you do not

use the Frag Shield paging file option on x64 versions of

Diskeeper.

8. The Set System Options (VSS Shadow Copy) option is

currently

visible in all x64 versions of Diskeeper, although this

feature is only available on Diskeeper Server Edition running

on Windows Server 2003.

9. The x64 versions of Diskeeper cannot currently be managed by

Diskeeper Administrator.

10. Diskeeper analysis is not currently supported on 8 TB or

larger volumes with a cluster size of 4 KB or smaller.

Displaying the Volume Map graphic on a volume this size is

very resource-intensive and is thus not currently supported

in this release. Note that you can still defragment these

volumes.

11. If you install a full or upgrade version of Diskeeper and

choose the "Register Later" option during the installation,

a shortcut is added to the Start Menu | Startup folder. This

shortcut will automatically be removed if the registration

process is later completed, or if you choose the "Never

Register" option. If however, you uninstall Diskeeper

before this shortcut is removed, it will not be removed by

the uninstall procedure, and rebooting the computer or

clicking the shortcut will result in an error message

indicating the "ESIRegister.exe" file cannot be found. This

shortcut can safely be manually deleted. Note that you can

always register Diskeeper via the Diskeeper Corporation

website at www.diskeeper.com/register.

Cant you just defragment using windows , normaly is this program better in any way?

Uses a better algorithm and has handy options like auto defragging in the background when it determines your drive needs it.

Yes, I like PD more too and believe it simply defrags better (more thoroughly). I guess its main disadvantage is that DK has more scheduling options like e.g. "defrag when not in use", but I never really want to do that anyway because I sometimes get annoyed by the noise if I'm doing something else in the room when the drive goes nuts. I then rather just schedule it to do it when I'm not there.

I still haven't made up my mind which one I like better: O&O, Diskeeper, or PerfectDisk. Out of the three I would have to say I perfer PerfectDisk, but Diskeeper is much fast-- without a doubt.

Thanks for the news though, can't wait for this to be released (Y)

thanks for the headsup. I have been using Perfectdisk for a while and very happy with it. It does the job more thoroughly and you can just 'feel' the difference after your HD is deframented.

Hopefully DK 10 will be the winner this time.

Any Perfect Disk users jumping over?

Maybe... or maybe not. This bit seems interesting:

If I recall correctly, PD's SmartPlacement reorganizes files by access date timestamps, but I could be wrong.

I sure hope this update would be worth it. Recent versions have been unimpressive.

We need serious reviews.

I'm staying with PD because I know it does it's job.

But I'm hoping there's a "faster" alternative.
