Steve Jobs, to preview leopard at Macworld

Recommended Posts

Not happening. Lame rumor. The keynote is an hour and a half. Half that time can easily be taken with the usual overview of Apple's successes: Macs sold, iPods sold, Tunes and Videos sold, a commercial or a demo/intro video or two. Add the fact that the video selection will be greatly expanded and partners trouted out (Say 20 minutes at least), that Intel Macs will be announced (at least 20 minutes), that there'll be a few new applications to demo (iWeb and new additions to iLife, FrontRow, and .Mac -- at least 20 minutes)... that would leave about 5 minutes to demo an OS that developers won't get a hold of for 6 months? Jesus, you can easily make up better rumors than this one.

While it is correct that all OS X upgrades now cost us, it isn't true that all of em aren't free.

OS 10.0 -> 10.1 was a free upgrade.

That only happened once because Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah was a complete nightmare. People would have rioted if they actually asked money for it. Mac OS X 10.1 Puma was the first "usable" Mac OS X release.

I didn't really see the point in making things extra hard so I just gave a basic explanation. Sometimes you need to scale down the available info. ;)

It's just like a paid service pack, they whack in some useless features and charge 90 pounds. Nothing to blow 'vista' out.

you're right.....10.5 wont blow vista out of the water.....10.4 already did that :p :D

I'd prefer if they had two separate stores - one for music (iTMS) and one for videos (Apple Cinema Store?). That said, I'd also prefer if we had two separate iLife programs; iTunes for music and something else for video - it would be so much nicer, in my opinion.

However it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Jobs tried to steal some of MS's thunder by releasing 10.5 around the same time as Vista.

I'm pretty sure Steve said on his very first announcement of Leopard that it was slated for a release around the same time as Vista (Dec '06?)

On another note, do we know if Leopard is 10.5 or OS 11? (I'm inclined to believe it's 10.5)

This is what I've always found funny with die-hard Mac supporters. Normally, I wouldn't even give comments like this a second thought but I see them all the time.

Exactly how can Apple ever blow any Microsoft OS "out of the water" when the former has less than 3% of the market, and the latter has around 90%?

Sure, amongst the Apple fans it would seem to be a blow out, but to the rest of the normal users of the world, they aren't even aware of that side of the fence.

So why even say anything to that effect, that company X will blow company Y out of the water? Who cares! Just be happy with what you use.

And I know you were joking to the side as well, I'm not attacking you, rather just that particular type of comment. It's nothing personal.

Except that he's referring to features, not a company or the marketshare of their product. Go look around... It happens everywhere. Does a BMW 325i blow away a Chevy Aveo? Yes. But by your logic, the first thing to say would be "But look at the marketshare!", which has nothing to do with what was said.

I have a couple of PC's (Gateway tower and Alienware Media Center PC) and an iBook. When I first got my iBook I was stoked about the pretty icons and general look of the OS. After that wore off (which didn't take too long) I found that I preferred XP. But that's just one man's opinion......

I'm interested to see where Apple goes with Front Row. As you may or may not already be aware, Front Row does not provide for TV viewing. Its simply another way of accessing existing media on your Mac. I never understood why its only available on iMacs. I mean.....it seems 'kinda pointless to have a remote for a 20" monitor or however big it is. I'm interested to see if they introduce a proprietary (imagine that) TV-tuner card and expand Front Row to a small form factor like the Mac Mini which is well suited for an A/V setup. I don't intend on hijacking this thread but the biggest problem with media center PC's is that they rely on analog TV-tuner cards. In essense, my pristine digital signal is degraded to analog quality. Furthermore, analog TV-tuners can't even process HD stuff so when I use my Media Center, I lose all of my HD content. For a guy like me who's invested 10 grand in an audio/video center (40" High Definition LCD, Media Center PC, Bose speakers blah blah blah) the last thing I want to see is craptastic analog TV.

Windows Vista will include CableCard support which changes the game. This will allow for digital TV-tuner cards and HD content. Obviously the technology exists. It will be interesting to see if Apple takes the lead.

Errr.....that theory makes absolutely no sense. LOL There is a *huge* difference between the prices of those 2 cars. On the other hand, Mac OS and XP can each be had for about a hundy. ;)
