Joel
He can ping names, or IPs? Is his DHCP and DNS set to auto?
+BudMan MVC Posted January 19, 2006 MVC Share Posted January 19, 2006 and what dns server is he using? using nslookup the server does not respond? Are you blocking traffic on port 53, both tcp and udp? IPconfig /all This will give you the IP address of the DNS server he is using. using nslookup - can he query? Example -- > www.neowin.net Server: 192.168.1.2 Address: 192.168.1.2#53 Non-authoritative answer: www.neowin.net canonical name = neowin.net. Name: neowin.net Address: 66.28.242.203 Name: neowin.net Address: 66.28.242.204 -- Try changing to a different server in nslookup.. say for example 4.2.2.2 -- > server 4.2.2.2 Default server: 4.2.2.2 Address: 4.2.2.2#53 > www.google.com Server: 4.2.2.2 Address: 4.2.2.2#53 Non-authoritative answer: www.google.com canonical name = www.l.google.com. Name: www.l.google.com Address: 64.233.167.147 Name: www.l.google.com Address: 64.233.167.99 Name: www.l.google.com Address: 64.233.167.104 -- Is he using a proxy? Could not tell if when you said he can ping - if you meant by IP address, or by name.. His browsers proxy could be having an issues resolving.. but the actual nameserver you machine is pointing to might be fine, etc..
hagjohn
He can ping domains names as well as IP's. He does get a beep out of the computer when he starts the ping and he seems to get oy (with 2 dots above the y) instead of the IP. Pinging microsoft.com [oy] with ...... DNS is set to auto and he is getting all DNS settings. DNS flush didn't do anything.
eversor
I once had this problem (only for a few hours though). When somehow the dns-server from my ISP went offline. Perhaps you can find an alternative dns-server (that was what i did. I was lucky my ISP listed all adresses of their server)

EZRecovery
Does your friend have Norton Internet Security? Have you completely close etrust? Open the command window and try: telnet www.google.com What do you get? Also, at the command prompt type: ipconfig /flushdns (enter) ipconfig /registerdns (enter) Open task manager and End Process on those that are not needed. Just for the heck of it, go to %windows%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts Right click on the file and open with notepad. Make sure it looks like this: # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host 127.0.0.1 localhost /EZ Edited January 19, 2006 by EZRecovery

hagjohn
We removed Norton and have closed everything.. still nothing. Did the ipconfig stuff and nothing. I'm doing a restore point from monday.. to see if it fixes the issue. Does your friend have Norton Internet Security? Have you completely close etrust? hagjohn
figured it out... he had removed an etrust av something... I went back to restore point and that fixed the issue... removed it again and no DNS resolution... so something there is the issue.
+BudMan MVC Posted January 19, 2006 MVC Share Posted January 19, 2006 And what exactly does remove a "etrust av something" mean? What did he do in etrust that would remove his ability to reslove? What your saying it the problem was the user messing with stuff they have no idea about.. and then wondering why stuff doesnt work?
hagjohn
He was unistalling eTrust Ez Antivirus because it's no longer downloading updates. +orgitnized Subscriber¹ Posted January 25, 2006 Subscriber¹ Share Posted January 25, 2006 If that's the case, try dropping to a command prompt and typing in "netsh winsock reset" (sans quotes) Restart your XP machine and see if things start working better for you. They made a program to reset Winsock settings for most Windows machines called Winsock XP Fix with great results in all the cases I've tried it in. It's not just for XP, but anyway. Maybe try to reset the catalog and see if you get some better results.

Tai
Some or all internet sites? When you say our DNS client, how do you mean? DNS software? only some - such as : www.crisscross.com and the www.msgplus.net .. among others ... neowin and most of the sites I usually visit are ok .. also my msn messenger lost some buttons such as "my space", etc ... at the same time this happened - reinstalling or repairing that doesn't work either ... so that could be related ... by DNS client, I mean the DNS client service located in services.msc .. which was causing an svchost.exe process to go to 100% .. until i disabled it. enabling it - cant browse , disabling it - can browse but not everywhere ... tried all the stuff in the thread so far and still the same (i get the "unable to connect" page in firefox .. etc ...) on sites I cant get to, but I can get to those sites via proxy sites such as anonymouse.org
Tai
ok, I resolved it .. it was the Hosts file, standing at 2mb with a lot of entries .. deleted it along with it's backups (i was using hostman awhile ago) .. and copied to it what appeared on page 1 of this thread dns client re-enabled now, and svchost.exe running normally. browsing ok too. thanks guys for all the help :)

Because I never heard of that being a Windows feature when it don't know the IP address of a domain name!
