And that's why penguins are best, even if Zooey Deschanel is hot :laugh:Edit: When the **** did NW turn off the swear filters? The Regal Wind
Vert, I'm just gonna assume you're reading a Douglas Adams book, 'cause that was an awesome reference. Also, good job again. I can't say this enough. XD
SooperDoode
On a side not does anyone know any good iTunes skins? All the ones I've seen are pretty bad. I've lookd and haven't seen any. One might have popped up though! Check dA or Google it :) It's raster. Raster=bitmap. I didn't really think it needed to be said, but you're supposed to do the SVG first... making a PNG is irrelevant, you just generate the sizes you need upwards from the SVG :p I have no idea what you just said :p. I know I was supposed to do the SVG but I have no clue how to make one....I really am not very knowledgeable with SVG's. I tried looking online for something and Adobe said Illustrator made them but whether that is true I'll never know. Anyway...sorry! I know I'm a complete idiot when it comes to this stuff. I'll stop offering to make icons now :pinch:

Update
Well, most of its fairly obvious if you've ever used a vector based program like illustrator before, main point being the lines and vector capability, but for something that REQUIRES .svg, or some kind of scalable vector suppport photoshop has non-existent support....just try to save as svg and see what happens..... best bet, "render" (draw) in illustrator and if absolutely needed export to photoshop, while losing the vector capability may i suggest a worth investment of your time (aka download time if you know what I mean  ) to Creative Suite
vertigosity
Inkscape - it's free, it's legal, hey, it's what I use to do vector art. And unlike the GIMP, it feels at least somewhat like a normal Windows app. Illustrator is Adobe's software for doing it; I think Jimmac (the creator of a lot of the Gnome and Tango icons) used it before he moved to Inkscape himself. In the olden days, when icons were only a few sizes, people used primarily raster/bitmap editors to do icons, but these days, vectors are where its at, since it's easier to play with them after the fact, scale them to size, and display them at different sizes. Tango actually specifies that you do >=48x48 in SVG, so if you wanted to be Tango, SVG is pretty much a requirement. All the smaller sizes can be done in a raster editor, but usually tweaking the SVG is enough, or at least gives you a very good start.
SooperDoode
@TEMPNEGROQ: Very good elaboration....thank you!! I've been using Photoshop CS2 for months now and it's usually great for me but as I really have only had experience creating UI images I did think of using something else. Illustrator is great with smoothing out lines which is why I wanted to use it but the er..."investment" is a pretty large one. Thanks for the advice though! I understand all this icon making business better now :) @vertigosity: How does InkScape compare to Illustrator? Does it smooth out lines and all or is that typical when creating vectors? Nevermind. It does smooth out lines...even does calligraphy! Very nifty :D I do apologize for my lack of knowledge with all of this. I usually teach myself tech things by breaking stuff and trying to fix them  Edited September 6, 2006 by SooperDoode

Hey, that's what I've always done  As far as I know, anti-aliasing is pretty much par for the course in vector image software. In fact, I haven't been able to find an option in Inkscape to make graphics with aliasing. If there was one, it'd be useful for playing with some stuff, like 16-color graphics for stuff that needs 'em. Of course, I've never played with Illustrator - since I'm a dialup man, its actual work to pirate stuff.

My gosh...it almost makes me want to scrap Photoshop completely. InkScape is also really low on resources which is a nice differance...enough of that though. I'm playing around with that foobar icon again. Maybe I'll actually make something decent this time ;). As for pirating stuff, I have DSL and it is still work for me. Just don't like the hefty price tag of some software out there. Nice to see free alternatives!

vertigosity
Just as a heads up to anybody who's hanging on the edge of their seat waiting for the next point release, I've been feeling really lazy about working on this lately, so I'll probably skip this month. would there happen to be a list of files that this modifies?and also, does it automatically create a backup copy of each modified file? thanks! It does create backups for everything it modifies. I don't really have a list, the closest thing there I have is the NSIS script that modifies it. I'd have to clean it up and format it if you want a look.

Update
If I wanted to change an icon, where would all the tango icons be located? Tango icons are good enough not to need editing.
