geek_rohit
Alonso has been given a 2 second penalty. So his qualifying is doomed already, and Hungary being a track where overtaking is very difficult, Alonso has a hard race in his hands. Fourjays Veteran Posted August 5, 2006 Veteran Share Posted August 5, 2006 (edited) Alonso seems to have lost his cool at the moment. Since Indianapolis he hasn't done too well in the races, he has been getting worked up over things that are pointless, and is generally not acting like the cool headed youngster who won last year. It's not good, as keeping a cool head is part of being a good driver. He keeps insisting that there is nothing wrong, yet there clearly is something wrong. Shibby
Only saw the last 30 laps or so but even then it was very eventfull. I'm in awe of Michael Schumacher driving but at the same time hate him. I thought he is not very friendly when he has to give another car the advantage. Poor Pedro having to get caught behind him, but he kept his head and knew part of the track which was tight to force Michael. Because Michael was only running on wet tires he knew he would keep it in or near the water. When Pedro forced him wide and then Michael over ran the turn and didn't let Pedro back i was just anoyed at how Michael acts. But sure enough Pedro got second in the end. Also glad heinfield got third. His car did have more power in the straights then the Mclaren but still not quick enough to beat the Ferrai. All in all a good race with some great weather Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/428992-official-2006-f1-season-discussion/page/7/#findComment-587762691 Share on other sites
bayrider
The last 30 laps were the ones worth watching. What a nail biter!! First Alonso gets taken out for a pit crew mistake, then it seemed as if Schumacher would come within 1pt of the points lead when his steering malfunctions!! I don't know if the stearing had anything to do with him cutting the corner on the chicane vs. de la Rosa, but it didnt seem like it because he kept fighting him for a good 2 laps. Then Schmacher loses his car! What about Kimi? He looked like he wasnt even looking at the track when he ran into Trulli. I was expecting a rather boring race, but once it cleared up, and the drivers started to fiddle with their tires, the race got 100x better. Congrats to Button for his first win! There are two variations on what happened to Alonso. Alonso himself said it was a driveshaft failure. Briatore is reported to have said it was a faulty wheel nut/pit crew error. I'm personally inclined to believe the latter - I'm pretty sure the rear right wheel was wobbling around a lot as he pulled off the track. With Schumacher, there are variations again. Some say his steering was going, and the tyres weren't gripping. Others say (and I go with this one) that when he tried to hold his line with Heidfeld, he forced Heidfeld to have to take the curb. Heidfelds car was momentarily in the air, causing him to understeer and catch Schumachers front right wheel on landing with his left rear, damaging part of Schumachers suspension. The corner cutting, I am sure is because Michael was trying to stay side-by-side with other cars overtaking in the chicane, in a single file corner. Kimi is reported to have been looking in his mirror to let Pedro past after making his stop. At the same time, Liuzzi slowed down to let the McLarens lap him. Kimi didn't expect or see this, and went into the back of him. Liuzzi and Kimi talked in the McLaren motor-home, and both blame themselves and decided to forget it Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/428992-official-2006-f1-season-discussion/page/7/#findComment-587763649 Share on other sites

I have it on DVR and watched a replay of the replay several times. They showed a still frame of the cap flying in the air right at the turn, and closeups of the rear tire wobbling like it was on a string. geek_rohit
I can't well imagine when was the last time I saw such a race. In fact my senses still tell me it was some race replay I had of some F1 simulation game sometime ago. It was all so dramatic...so unpredictable...yet so entertaining. Never had a race this season, or maybe last season even, so entertaining. And that too on a track, which is considered of giving us the most boring races, where overtaking is a rare event. I would certainly take my words back about Hungarian GP being a bore one. It started off right before the day when the 5 lights went off. Both the championship contenders were slammed a two second penalties. Result? 12th for Michael and 15th for Alonso. And boy was the race start something. Schumacher shot right across cars in his front to take P5 from P12 at the first corner itself!!! It looked so promising for Schumi, more so as he is the rain specialist. But then suddenly Ferrari started to look like they were in some serious problems. Massa started to drop way back, Schumi too lost a couple of places, and things were really looking bad, very bad, so bad that I had lost all hopes that either of them would even finish in points. Giancarlo Fisichella had a really bad day. First he was unable to overtake Michael (which ironically Alonso managed quite easily), and when he finally did, had lost the traction to go into the gravel trap. I sometimes wonder that Fisico needs some serious motivation or overtaking classes, else Renault have serious problems next season without Alonso. Anyways back to the Ferrari problem, as with wet races of all times, my last hope was that a safety car will come at some point (and it did come due to Kimi's crash) and rescue Ferrari in some way. No direct help was there, in fact Schumi was last in the line of cars behind the SC. He didn't stop either for fresh tyres. But Ferrari had taken a BIG calculated risk. Alonso had crashed, Button was leading, and Schumi...would you believe it...was second!!! Holy Christ!!! How on earth! He was lapped by Alonso some laps earlier!!! He was clocking fastest laps, imagine a car which was the worth in those wet conditions, suddenly was fastest in the drying conditions, that too with the intermediates. But even though the Bridgestone intermediates were the better than Michelin's, Schumi still had the risk of loosing that second place, or maybe even the third, or the worst case scenario would be a DNF! Coz the tyres might now be able to last that long and eventually collapse. It was a calculated risk, and Ferrari had to take it, even though he might loost the podium, he will get those valuable points to cut back the lead from Alonso. But then as with great stories, this story too had a climax, which saw Michael retiring from the race without any points (later again on this part). The lead remains intact, just one point reduced in the contructors' championship lead between Renault and Ferrari. But amidst all this drama, Jenson Button finally managed to take his maiden Formula One win in the 113th Grand Prix start of his career! :p He has been on the podium 14 times earlier, but never on the top step, which to his relief he has managed now. Rubens Barrichello's fourth place means Honda take 15 points from the race and are not comfortable placed in the fourth place in the championship, some 26 points (Toyota incidently has only 16 points, that means Honda have double the points) clear of their Japanese opponents Toyota. After the race its announced that Robert Kubica's mainden points will be removed and hence Felipe Massa moves up to seventh place, with Michael Schumacher now classified eighth, despite not finishing the race. The point Schumacher scores means he is now just ten behind Fernando Alonso in the drivers? championship standings, while Ferrari are only seven behind Renault in the race for the constructors? crown. Only 5 rounds remain now. And its going to be a close battle in the drivers' championship. Until the next race at Turkey in 3 three weeks time. Everyone looks back at the season's achievements. Button in particular, as the entire nation of United Kingdom would be celebrating Button's win.
