Dwarden
IMHO this release is worse than previous ... software explorer is nice but ... where the hell vanished System explorers : ActiveX / IE's BHO, TB, settings / SEH etc. viewers ? many other functions well done in beta 1 are now gone completely too ... not to mention bugs like exclusion function cease to work at all etc .. in sum this product looks like fast newly coded "rip off" from previous version ... I think Microsoft Antispyware was too feature rich and Microsoft were afraid of the DOJ and another Antitrust case. So the free Windows Defender was raped of features. However, I bet the antispyware that comes with Onecare will incredibly be feature laden. Coneneo
I've had no problems here. Quite like the simple nature of Windows Defender. The only problem that I find is that the Home page looks a bit too empty. So much space is wasted there. The interface, although simplified, is a bit on the dull side unlike Microsoft Antispyware. The Icon for Windows Defender could also be a bit better, why can't they use the old one as there's nothing wrong with that. The RAM usage for me however is very low and scanning is much faster. All in all, a good upgrade though I hope that Microsoft improves the interface a little bit more. PSG22 I second that. leesmithg
No problems installing it, though I am miffed that it doesn't add itself to start up folder and the little castle doesn't sit in the notification area. JaDz
i get this error every time i try to install Error 1609. An error occurred while applying security settings. Users is not a valid user or group. This could be a problem with the package, or a problem connecting to a domain controller on the network. Check your network connection and click Retry, or Cancel. please someone help :s :s OK, here we go: Add a usergroup named "USERS", add the user "Administrator" to this group. Retry the setup. If it worked, you can delete the usergroup "USERS". Hope it helps. Please excuse my bad English. XerXis
i just don't understand why the icon is not in the systray all the time. right now when i want to scan my computer i have to go to the configuration settings screen to open windows defender. because it didn't even make a start menu group. where's the sense in that? :| Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/432274-windows-defender-beta-2-now-available/page/4/#findComment-587194313 Share on other sites
alsiladka
because it didn't even make a start menu group. where's the sense in that? Coneneo
On second thought, the icon in bigger sizes does look good, about the same angle away from the user like the other vista icons. It is the 16X16 size which looks crappy, pointing straight at the user. @Xerxis defender puts a shortcut right on the main programs list for me. XerXis
This is why. that's not a reason, that's a design choice, one that i don't like. being able to open microsoft antispyware simply by double clicking the tray icon was easy and fast. Now i know i can add a shortcut myself, but it should be there by default as the program is running in the background. eilegz
trying it right now so far i hate the defender name and the new icon, the new ui looks ok, its a big difference compared to beta 1 that its just more like a rebrand of giant antispyware. ZonoBurk
Ugh I hate to double post. BUG: In Windows XP Home Edition they cannot create user groups . See: Error 1609, Windows Defender, non english versions Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/432274-windows-defender-beta-2-now-available/page/4/#findComment-587194555 Share on other sites
PsiMoon314
Hi, The 1609 Error is just a symptom of a bug or perhaps poor program design. Not all environments use "Administrator" as the built-in Administrator account name. Nor in the "Users" group called "Users". I suspect you will get this error if you have renamed the built in Admin account to something else, e.g. "Admin" or if you are using a non-English version of XP. Quite how XP Home users can work around this is something of a mystery at the moment as it doesn't seem possible to change create the accounts or groups manually in this version of XP.
