Forcing Full Screen Games -> Window

Question

Hello everyone...

Been some time since my last post.. lurking all the time

Anyway, I've a problem that I hope someone here knows how to solve..

I'm trying to replay Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII for PC, and was thinking if a software exist to force the full screen 320x240/640x480 into a window.

Personally, the ONLY way I found for it to work is to have it played in another machine and get this machine to VNC it, but that's a total waste of resources, not to mention there's no audio.

So does anyone know of any programs that can force a low-res full screen application/game into window mode? Thanks in advance!

It isn't DOS. It uses Direct3D rendering/software rendering and is a Windows game. So I doubt it'll work with DOSBox. I can load it now with sound, but it's full screen and Final Fantasy VIII even has some black blocks problem with all the GeForce6 series cards and above using Direct3D render (Including my 7800GT). I thought that playing them in a window would make the graphics look sharper.

All I can think of is a game patch or a legacy direct3D project, if one even exists!

Stick with software rendering, you're probably not playing old games to spooge at the graphics anyway.

Hey, i think i know. When it's loaded up full screen hold the "alt" key and press "enter".

please let me know if it works :)

Nah, it doesn't. I already tried this beforehand..

Guess I'll need to see if someone is able to make a patch for it in the still-active FF7-PC community.. Or another way I thought would be to use VMWare to create a virtual machine and playing it there

try this program

http://www.3dfxzone.it/dir/tools/3d_analyze/

download/extract.

select the game exe.

check 'force windowed mode',

test and report how it went. :)

I selected the "Force Window Mode" and it didn't appear to work. It did appear to change the resolution so I'll maybe dig a bit deeper.

Edit: http://www.yoshi.us/forums/archive/index.php/t-16036.html - looks like we aren't the first to try :(

Many games accept certain command-line parameters which let you put the game in window mode. Halo (PC), for instance.

To put Halo in window mode, right click on a shortcut to halo.exe and go to properties. Put the following words after the quotes which surround the shortcut's target:

-window

so it should look somthing like this:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo\halo.exe" -window

Other games have similar ways of being put into window mode. Try googling it if you need it for a specific game

There is of course plenty of 3d party software which let you do this to any full screen program... once again, try googling it

Final Fantasy VIII (FF8) Window Mode

http://files.to/get/402817/45187/FF8_AutoWindow.rar

(Works with FF7 too but then you need to manually make the dxwnd program launch FF7 instead of FF8)

Have Fun! :D

Sorry didn't find edit button, but here is a version 2 of my pack.

I forgot to make it check for both FF8.exe and FF7.exe when launching so here is a dynamic (FF8/FF7) version: :p
