matt11601
My next computer is going to be a mini-ITX and I wanted to get creative with the case. Since I've never physically built a case (only put everything together), I was wondering about the stand-offs that elevate the motherboard. Do I pre-drill a hole and then screw in the stand offs? And afterwards, do I place the motherboard on top and then screw it into the stand offs? I plan on making the case out of MDF or some other material which is why I have no clue on how to secure the motherboard to the material so any help would be appreciated. Thanks. -Matt Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/433566-planning-to-build-a-mini-itx-case/ Share on other sites
Sam
Surely if its a wood case, it elimates the need for standoffs? Anyway, if you make it out of wood, watch out for the heat issues. Gabureiru
I think the best material for constructing a case is Aluminum, at least .63mm thick Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/433566-planning-to-build-a-mini-itx-case/#findComment-587208241 Share on other sites
matt11601
Yea, I didn't think wood would be conductive either, but then I thought about how to secure it and stand-offs seemed to work too. I would love to build an aluminum case, but I've never worked it with it before, that's why I thought MDF would be easier to use. Gabureiru
Yeah, I have the same idea of building an aluminum one, but is harder to work aluminum. Most aluminum cutting work is made with a CNC machine, and even just to bend it you need a breaker. You can PM for a specific idea I have, and maybe we can help out each other. Allan
Search GOOGLE for mini-itx... aLOT of good resources ... many sites w/ ideas on how to build (custom) ITX cases. http://www.retrosystem.com ... or a better site http://www.mini-itx.com WAFFLE IRON PC: LEGO BOX PC: Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/433566-planning-to-build-a-mini-itx-case/#findComment-587209658 Share on other sites
matt11601
Yea mini-itx is a great site. That's where I got the idea to build a custum case instead of buying one. I'll check out retrosystem and see if anything catches my eye. Thanks for the links. matt11601
After looking through those sites, I think stand-offs are not required. I think I can just drill some screws through the holes on the motherboard. These screws would then go through the plexiglass, thus securing the motherboard. Can anyone confirm if this is a good idea or not?
