Windows Vista : 8 Versions Explained

wow, Starter is totally stupid. right now I have like 9 apps running, and my MOM uses more at once. seriously, how totally useless.

The Starter edition is NOT a normal edition - it's a cheap version for sale in third-world countries were piracy is rampant. No normal user would get Starter edition, and they're not intended to.

As for me, I'd probably go for Business, but that "game performance tweaker" is enticing; I think my purchase decision will hinge on whether that feature is really worth anything.

So basically this is the list of what you can actually buy with all the crap cleaned out.

You need to take Enterprise off your list. Regular customers won't be able to buy it, it'll only be available through Software Assurance volume licensing.

So really, there are only four versions of Vista that consumers will need to worry about. I think the biggest confusion will be between Home Basic and Home Premium.

Remember people, the Vista DVD will contain all of the versions on it. You need only the key appropriate for the version you want to install that version. But it is rather silly to deny users the full features of the OS. It only promotes two things, warez and just sticking to XP.

It seems MS is going the route of Mac via the OS. I hope its' not the trend....

On the computers starter will be running on it is probably a reasonable limit.

Oops, too late to edit but you are right. :)

This edition is for the Europeans as they have antitrust rulings against Microsoft which does not allow the player to be bundled.

Keep in mind that all those "N" editions isn't that available in Europe though, since they're basically not sold anywhere, separate or as OEM copies. I guess barely anyone want to sell them, and we aren't obliged to use these versions either. They're only found in Europe (somewhere hidden in a dark corner) though, but they can just as well be ignored as you'll likely not find them even if you tried to. :s

Windows Vista Ultimate - This one is going to be the most expensive, most feature-packed, and perhaps the most pirated edition of Vista. It’ll include new and unique features such as Game Performance Tweaker, Podcast creation utility, online “Club” services and privileged product support. This edition will be perfect for Windows fanboys.

Hmm... I hope MS allows selection of features at install time, as just because you'd like a performance tweaker doesn't mean you want online club services and a podcast creation utility. The bloat could become a problem in Ultimate.

nLite does that and plenty more anyway so it's not an issue for me.

hmmn... i've liked some of the beta features so far... this 'ultimate' seems like a great reason to go digging through the first edition of the MSDN shipment of CDs after its released... muahahaha, i love having a dad who gets the MSDN enterprise kit

Apparently, they are trying to make it a convenience by including more versions so that users can save a little money and choose exactly what they want. But having fixed many computers for people, 6 versions sounds like its going to hurt Microsoft. When I go to fix computers, people usually have 95 or 98. I ask them to upgrade to XP. A couple days later, I get back a call asking me if they should get Home or Pro and there is a 20 min discussion why they should get Home or Pro. 6 versions is just going to confuse the average user more than they need to. They are gonna have 6 versions of Vista sitting in front of them and I bet that they are not going to know which is the best for them right away. I dont wanna be on the phone for an hour!
