AndyD
I'll have a deposit down soon but I won't believe a word Sony says till they show a final system with actual games running on it. I'd be worried if their E3 showing is nothing more than what was done last year Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/442749-ps3-worldwide-release-in-november/page/2/#findComment-587310340 Share on other sites

Ironman273
How is it very late? I mean look at the 360, it doesn't have a next-gen optical drive or a next-gen video connector, it's dev-kit was only final not long before launch and there were far from enough consoles for launch. If anything, the Xbox 360 was rushed and launched too early. Revolution will also be out at around the PS3 release. It's only a 7 month to a year difference which is not a lot in the console industry. Well, to be fair, it's too early to tell if Blu-ray will even be the "next-gen" optical drive of choice. It may still turn into a Betamax. I am curious as to how MS will supposedly offer an HD-DVD drive on the 360 though. As far as the video connector, it's only a matter of releasing a new cable for the 360. The Dreamcast comparison is very fair, though. Shycho
Finally some information. Sounds like all good news for us here in the UK, because i thought it would be about march 07 before we got it, thank god for the worldwide release. Definatly going to be putting a deposit on one of these. It will be a sad day when the ps2 gets replaced. All we need now is a damn price. I would say that after this news, HD-DVD will have a hard time battling Blu-ray. Especially after 6 million Blu-ray players (PS3) are in homes around the world by the end of the year. Why didn't Microsoft release a HDMI connector with the 360? I mean if it could do it why the fudge would they hold it back? For all the people saying Sony are handing out the final dev-kits too late, firstly they're giving developers more time than Microsoft did with the 360 dev-kits. Secondly the dev-kits with the final Cell and RSX chips will be given out in April, the only things keeping it from being final are the BD drive and controller. So developers will be able to program on the main final hardware next month. http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/docs/20060315/scei1.htm Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/442749-ps3-worldwide-release-in-november/page/2/#findComment-587310494 Share on other sites
firen
March 15, 2006 - Sony Computer Entertainment's answer to Xbox Live is at last coming into light. While previous comments from company executives were unclear on the matter, company president Ken Kutaragi today assured members of the press, 3rd party companies and investors that the PS3 would be seeing a service similar to Microsoft's.The service, which is currently going under the working name of "PlayStation Network Platform," will see its service kick off at the PS3 launch in November. Basic service will be free of charge initially, although it should be noted that Kutaragi did not comment on what exactly constitutes "basic service." Business will take place on the open internet, suggesting that the service will be more open than Xbox Live. The service will offer full support for Online title development, providing necessary functions and services for commerce and community. Sony made note of some of the major features that all Online titles will be able to access: Communication/Community: Voice/Video chat Messaging Lobby/Matchmaking Score/Ranking Friend list/Avatar Game data upload/download Commerce: Shop (accessible from inside games) Content Download Micro Payment Subscription Entitlement (user access rights) management Account: User Registration Login ID/Handling of name issues Sony didn't announce an Xbox Arcade style game download system, but it did state that games will be bootable from the hard disk, noting this as part of the commerce opportunities for the system. Sony Computer Entertainment will take care of investment and operation of a commonly used infrastructure. However, SCE will be allowing licensees to connect their own game servers to the network. SCE's network, with data centers throughout the world, is being developed in conjunction with Sony Online Entertainment. Kutaragi's comments from today's PlayStation Business Briefing in Tokyo set the framework for a hefty Online system on Sony's next generation beast. There's still room for speculation, though, so we encourage you to take to the message boards and speculate away. Plus, regardless what this guy said in the press conference, we still don't have a final price for the system. It may still be less expensive to buy a 360 and the add on hd-dvd Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/442749-ps3-worldwide-release-in-november/page/2/#findComment-587310627 Share on other sites

And 360 will probably eventually have HDMI, I was just saying that it's strange that they didn't release it (or DVI) with the console. freedom77
Iam extremely interested in the PS3 now, I know 2 people that have a xbox360 and while he loves it, it has no appeal to me, and with the amount of problems(both of them have broken) i thin the PS3 is looking much more promising, and i think the late release shows there not rushing to get it finished, much like i feel MS did. tiagosilva29
60gigs is alot of harddrive space really. if they aren't trying to make it into a Tivo like device then there is no reason whatsoever to need all that space for a console, there can be such a thing as overkill. 60GB sounds decent... at least to me. Let's imagine this: downloadable demos or mini-games, storage of your own music (even 5.1) to play in the X, Y or Z games, detailed backups... jerry
Interesting news about the PS3 online service... Apparently its going to be totally free. "That service, which is clearly designed as a direct competitor to Microsoft's Xbox Live, will be entirely free and will be available from the launch of the console, offering standard features such as game lobbies, player matching, voice chat and a variety of commercial features including software which will be distributed over the network and can be stored on the hard drive." More details in the link below: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=15356 This is going to be a challenge for Live. If the news is true and you will be able to play other people on the PS3 service for free then surely Microsoft are going to have to either reduce the charge or make their Live service free too. Its been corrected now to "basic service will be free..". Like other topics, too vague to get excited over. And 360 will probably eventually have HDMI, I was just saying that it's strange that they didn't release it (or DVI) with the console. My guess would be that they looked at TVs with HDMI connectors and at the time there were not enough in the market. Certainly by November there will be so it makes sense. I have a 57" HD projector and it doesn't have HDMI. As the need arises, they will release a cable.
