Not in the UK and probably the rest of Europe. Almost all BB modems in the UK are USB for some reason.

The broadband modems that SBCYahoo! and Comcast give out here in the US are USB, with ethernet as well and they encourage users to use USB

Build has been installed. I will say that the performance/speed has been improved alot (I am running on 512 MB RAM), and I am thinking of using this as my main OS. You can't notice that much changes. Desktop screenie attached in post.

What does x86 mean anyway?

If you don't know THAT, you really shouldn't be beta-testing an OS. :no:

(But that's not my judgement to make, so...)

CRC is to verify the file's integrity. Multiple keys for multiple systems, testing different platforms, hardware, etc.

How to verify CRC? and what will happen if I use the same product key at difference hardware?

can you confirm all this to us?

* The real Aero Glass. Till now what we have seen is Aero Express and Aero Express w/ Transparency. But That?s not Aero, not at all. Expect to see fully scalable vector based transparencies that take advantage of pixel shading?. and actually show us what DX10 can do!*

* Aero Express will have a new transparent PNG layer instead of that nasty grey? which means that all you VMware and VPC users can experience what we?ve had all along.. and its no longer uglier than XP?s Luna.*

* Home Basic users will not have advantage of the sleek transparent 3-bit PNGs, instead they get the opaque "glass" that was Aero Express till now?

* The "Vista Flare" effect. At the moment not many details are available, but we suspect it is a form of Aurora in the preview bar.. more on that below.

* A real Gadgets gallery.

* Support for Pocket PC 2000, 2002, and 2003 synchronization.

* A complete firewall shell that will replace any need for third party applications.. A good thing too seeing as Symantec razed Sygate to the ground, and the Sygate 5.6 doesn?t run on Vista..

* Some real tight wallpapers

* More cool 3d (DX10?) screensavers.*

* Some XP screensavers running on Vista.

* Movable toolbars in IE7.

* Green shaded address bar in IE when visiting SSL secured sites.

I find it hard to believe that Microsoft would keep the "real" Aero Glass hidden until a build this late in the game. Can anybody confirm/deny these claims?

That website is making some suspect claims. But I hope that they're right.

There was a command-line CRC checking utility provided by MS (from some beta or Windows itself), not sure what you would use now to check CRC. I think the new FTM checks the file after you download it anyways (before declaring the download Completed).

You can't activate more than one system with the same key (though for now in the Beta, you get 5 activations per key).

We get routers, but most standard modems are free when you get a broadband connection. Only the intelligent people replace them with routers :p

Hi all,

Currently downloading the Vista Build 5342 at about 250-300kb/s.

Just some questions for anyone who's alreay got it installed...

1. Is the hardware support better?

2. Is the stability of the release much better?

3. Will it automatically detect a LAN created in XP and configure it in Vista?

I had some problems with build 5308 (only just got invited into the Beta on Tuesday). I couldn't configure a LAN, or figure out how to connect to the existing one or setup a new one. As well, Sidebar and WMP11 crashed constantly, as did the entire system, and very frequently. Also, when I installed the sound card drivers, they uninstalled themselves when the computer got turned off and then back on. I know there was a thread on here about getting your sound card to work in Vista 5308, but I've searched and I can't seem to find it.

I'm not sure this is really the right place to be asking, but how does one get the sound and networking to be functional in Vista? Maybe it will all be better in this build? Any comments for those with 5342 already installed would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Alex

The real Aero Glass. Till now what we have seen is Aero Express and Aero Express w/ Transparency. But That’s not Aero, not at all. Expect to see fully scalable vector based transparencies that take advantage of pixel shading…. and actually show us what DX10 can do!*

Total Bull****. Direct X 10 would require Direct X 10 hardware to use any new features. You think Aero Glass would require video card solutions that don't even exist in the market yet ?

Aero Glass is already out. There will be no super changes to Aero. I don't know why people keep making this up.

* Aero Express will have a new transparent PNG layer instead of that nasty grey… which means that all you VMware and VPC users can experience what we’ve had all along.. and its no longer uglier than XP’s Luna.*

BS.

BS.

BS.

* A real Gadgets gallery.

Probably a few more gadgets.

* Movable toolbars in IE7.

BS.

This is almost as stupid as that story about 60 percent of windows being rewritten. I mean come on! That's so stupid, and everyone believed it. here's scoble on it : http://scobleizer.wordpress.com/2006/03/24...heck-is-scoble/
