or just duplicate the layer and hide the first layer(which is below the duplicate) and then click on the wand to select the area u want clear. once you select it click on "delete" or "ctrl+X" or just right click cut . thats all

If you just save it and then open it in photoshop, the only layer will be the background layer which will be locked, so you copy it to make it editable. Pretty that is what he means. It's easier to just copy and paste it into a blank file.
