Download a system utility like TinkerTool or Cocktail (Google them) and enable hidden files and folders. You'll notice that every folder has it's own DSStore file. Delete those at your own risk.

I'm a bit amazed by the fact all your folders actually adapted to that weird size. :/ You sure it's not only the folders you opened after the "accident"?

it only happens when i open the finder from the dock, and furthermore it only happens when i have that selected to open in the applications folder. right now i have set to open to my home folder, so when I open the finder from the dock it opens to my home folder and its fine. but if I change it to open to the applications folder, it will open long like that. Im gonna try running system maintenance and see if that does anything.

It will take a while, but you can drag it using the edges of the finder window, so you can drag it up (so you end up at the bottom), then resize it.

This was a bug introduced in Tiger, in Panther zooming the finder window would make it fit the items, but in Tiger it zooms too far, making the icons wrap, so when you press it again it shrinks into the space where the icons were, but causes them to wrap again.

Somehow I've always had the feeling that Tiger has more of these weird bugs than Panther ever did. What annoys me is that they're still here after six 10.4.x updates.
