Why is apatch for messenger bad

Question

1) it hides the ads, microsoft gives you a free service the only thing you have to endure are one or 2 little ads. you should at least have the respect not to hide them. if you don't like them, don't click on it. But you agreed to msn (windows live) messenger to be adware when you downloaded it, respect that agreement.

I have the same problem with adblocker extensions for firefox, they take away the income of people who work hard and invest a lot and whose only revenue are ads. And on the long term, it's only making companies more determined to deliver the ads anyway which means resorting to spyware. So do us all a favor, don't block ads!

2) it's clearly a violation of the messenger eula, and as such illegal. why are people even allowed to post about new releases on neowin? i have the impression that neowin always uses two kind of standards in these matters

Along the lines of the original post, if everybody

did as you think, while watching a television movie,

no one is allowed to tune other channels or visit the

restroom during commercials because if you use

their video signal for free then you are obligated

to view their advertisments so they can get paid

for their time.

If you must do other chores or duties you must wait

until the movie has ended or not start watching it

at all. Once you have started viewing the movie

you are expected to view at least a portion of the

ads before changing the channel or leaving the

viewing room.

Can there be a designated ads viewer in the household

that, while others are doing other more important things,

sits and watches the ads so that the broadcasters can

have the privilege of a live audience for them. Should

the responsibility for ad watching be distributed throughout

the viewing participants? How many ads should each one

endure before someone else must replace him?

What a bunch of stupid ****. I can just hear it now:

"Come on kids, the commercial is about to come on. The

movie wasn't very good but these commercials are great".

This guy must work for akamai technologies. Jerk.

People have choices whether or not to use these patches,(just like if a commericial comes up on tv, are you gonna turn the channel and watch something else or watch the commericial?) Its up to us in my opinion to make the right decision. I dont think this will hurt a multi-billion dollar company one bit, do you? Its not like microsoft is gonna go be broke anytime soon, so honestly who gives a sh**, I personally will continue to use this great little app. :)

MSN messenger is bloated, and the only reason people block the damn ads it's to make the damn thing look better. I don't think MSN is bad software, but they way it's delivered to customers it's definitely a huge pile of crap. Take out the tabs, some buttons, and voila! It kinda looks pretty. I don't think the main reason people hide the ads is because they're ****ed off: most people won't look at them even if they're there.

And as for blocking ads, there is nothing illegal or immoral about it. You don't like to see ads, you don't see them. I don't block ads because I (as MANY people over there) "mentally" block ads. When those annoying things get on my way (flash popups, popups, etc) get on my way, I automatically close them. If people is not even going to pay the slightest attention to them, why should they be forced to see them? Let them block them and be happy.

And the spyware thing is BS. The whole "ads" thing is just big spyware thing: the least thing I want is to have "personalized" ads because those companies record the pages I visit, the searches I do (yes, i mean google) and that.

Plus, most of those annoying ads you will find in those pages cointain spyware anyway (animated emoticons included in ".exe" files? Suspicious to say the least). So your whole point is: don't block the ads, because more spyware will be released. But the ads lead to files/pages containing spyware, so what?

Microsoft is awfully rich, so it's not like they're going to bakrup because a few geeks don't want to see the ads. Not only that, but there are A LOT of websites that get R I C H because of displaying annoying casino ads, emoticons ads, and so on. Go to google and search for a lyric of a popular song... those pages take AAAAAAAGES to load because they're loaded with crap, and they're getting rich. RICH! Because that's not the typical "click on the ads so we pay the servers".... it's just business, anyway

Some time ago I did talked about this (the constant violation of EULAs) via PM with a moderator.

I don't remember the end of the conversation.

Yeah, don't even try that one. One day they ban you (I'm talking hypothetically) because publishing a guide to bypass the WGA, and the other day they publish it right in the front page... It's not that I love WGA or microsoft stupid EULAs ... but I can live with neowin trying to do be on the "right" side of the law...

"Come on kids, the commercial is about to come on. The

movie wasn't very good but these commercials are great".

Sad thing is, that is the truth...

Microsoft won't remove the ads or make them impossible to patch because:

a) they know a workaround can always be found

b) they know the majority will always see them anyways

I believe it is someone's choice what to do with software once they legally get it. If an organization gives me a free cup with its logo on it, I can spray paint it, smash it or throw it out. The organization won't care because they know all the other cups will most likely remain as given. If I buy microsoft office 2003 and I change all my icons, then I really don't see the problem. I payed for it. It's mine. I can do whatever the hell I want. Since WL messenger is free, it really shouldn't matter.
