Neowin's Official World Cup 2006 Thread

have you even seen the incident replay? if he really had done it intentionally dont you think the player would have been in a little more agony than he was, he didnt even need treatment did he? a ball hits a player there and theyre down for a couple mins recieving treatment, he was straight up after the card was shown. if anything rooney was being fould by the 2 portugal players, most of the comentators around the world share that view, holland, spain for a start.

the only thing the card could have been given is for the push, which you can not say deserved a red card. i mean figo headbutted someone in the holland vs portual bloodbath and only got a yellow.

im not saying its only the england games that have had bad refereeing, but every match playing so far, no consistancy in bookings, refs that are card happy, players diving and faking injuries, look at henry he went down clutching his face when he got tapped on the shoulder. seriously it has been a very bad worldcup for good football.

but im not going to get in to a flame war cos thats just pointless so ive said all i am going to on the matter.

I and i'm pretty sure alot of people here would agree that being beaten by Penalties is an unfair way to go out.

Both side have to go through this "unfair" system so it ends up being fair, no side has an unfair advantage beyond the players alibity. Did the better team win? I know everybody wants to win but the team wants the 'win' more than the other team will get it with their actions on and off the field.

Rooney shouldn't have got a red card on the play, a yellow would suit better. Ronaldo dives alot, but he does get hassled by the defence and it rarely gets called.

I missed the France/Brazil game, anyone got a link to the shootout between England/Portugal? :)

How the hell do you english guys have the right to call us anti fair play when lots of you are going to give Ronaldo his own HELL? Stop being so ridiculous, every euro / world cup the same thing goes on: England allways tries to get excuses, allways get problems, cant you guys accept being beaten? Pathetic.

You cant find reason for Rooney's red card? Are you all blind? He smashed Caravalho's guts and pushed Ronaldo, dont tell me he didnt do that on purpose, we all know Rooney, stop being so hypocrit, it is so typic of him to do this kind of things on purpose, i know him very well.

Fair play consists of not diving or adding rolls and theatrics to a fair tackle.

Did you not notice that your defenders were fouling Rooney first either? If you actually watch the replay hes trying to stand up when he puts his foot down. A push is hardly a sending off, I've seen several this world cup with no consequences at all. A headbutt for example is only worth a yellow. ;)

Beckham has stood down as England captain, although I did expect it, I think Gerrard or Terry should get the armband now

David Beckham has announced he is to stand down as England captain following the Three Lions' disappointing World Cup exit.

An emotional Beckham, who was holding back the tears as he delivered the news at a press conference, described the move as ' the most difficult decision of my life'.

The Real Madrid midfielder revealed that it had long been his intention to relinquish the captaincy after this summer's tournament.

"I have lived the dream," Beckham told Sky Sports News. "I'm extremely proud to have worn the armband and been captain of England, for that I will always be grateful."

"It has been an honour and privilege to captain my country but I feel the time is right to pass on the armband as we enter a new era under [new coach] Steve McClaren.

"I came to this decision some time ago and I had hoped to announce it on the back of a successful tournament."

You might just get your wish by the looks of it.

Cristiano Ronaldo has rocked Manchester United by admitting that reports linking him with a move to Real Madrid should Juan Miguel Villar Mir win the presidential elections on Sunday are true.

The Manchester United man made the revelation after scoring the penalty that knocked England out of the World Cup in Gelsenkirchen.

Ronaldo was quoted earlier in the week as stating he had agreed to move to Spain if Villar Mir emerged victorious in the club's elections, but the report was dismissed by both United and manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

However, Ronaldo has now shocked his employers after conceding that he is keen on a switch to Los Merengues.

"Yes, they are true," he said when quizzed on the reports, adding later: "After the World Cup, I decide my life."

Ronaldo now seems intent on securing a switch away from Old Trafford, but his relations with his team-mates would have been tetchy in any case after his performance in Germany.

The winger courted unpopularity by appearing to demand a red card for United team-mate Wayne Rooney, who was dismissed after being adjudged to have stamped on Ricardo Carvalho.

Rooney was incensed at the actions of Ronaldo and pushed the Portuguese youngster in the chest before being shown the red card.

However, Ronaldo has now insisted that he did not seek an early bath for his club ally.

"I complained to the referee about the foul but I didn't ask for a red card," Ronaldo added.
