Some idiot put a shortcut to shutdown.exe in the Startup folder, making the thing useless now, unless the owner deletes it

just fixed it, closed the window before it got to shut down then removed the startup entry from the registry :)

edit: maybe you may want to consider putting realvnc on there so you can allways monitor whats goin on...

I'm interested in how it's done, but someone managed to break out of the limited account and add something to my admin desktop to prove they did. I know it's not a password hack, as the admin password is VERY strong, and the only clue that I found to how it was done is the same user downloaded a program designed to fill up the hard disk with millions of 1kb temp files till the disks full - is it some overflow exploit when listing the contents of a directory, or some lack of security on a full hd?

anyway - I've kept the old hd for examination, and restored it to the previous state - it should be working again in a sec.

note: I moniter whats going on by watching and recording net traffic, and "shadowing" suspicious sessions - quite a lot of people have tried various exploits - only one person has broken out of the limited user account so far. (thats not a challange to break it, but if anyone wants to put a note on the "sticko designs" desktop telling me how bad my security is then fine)

Also - nobody is to try re-flashing my router, thats a pain to fix!

Hello1234, it's nice you're doing the community a service by offering these betas up on a remote desktop, but I doubt you'll be able to keep this up for anymore than a week, judging by the actions of several boneheads in this community.

Good job anyways.

---------------------------

Remote Desktop Disconnected

---------------------------

The client could not connect to the remote computer.

Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections.

It is also possible that network problems are preventing your connection.

Please try connecting again later. If the problem continues to occur, contact your administrator.

Weird error message I keep getting. Has anyone got the same? I'm running Norton Internet security 2005 and XP SP2. Thanks.

Also, good job Hello1024. If only limited accounts would live up to their name! :)

Cheers.

Redeemed

Edit: BTW, what's the password, Hello1024? Is it still beta? because you said that you reset the password.

seems someones broke my net connection (maybe turned it into a zombie pc?), and since I'm not at home at the moment I can't fix it - I've tried connecting to all the different pc's in my lan, with VPN, RDP, http, ftp etc. and thay're all down so either the routers broken, or the networks overloaded.

I can probably fix it on wednesday (31/05/06) when I'm next back at home.

It's a shame there are some real bastards out there but thanks for doing this, again. Keep it up!

I haven't had a chance to try the remote version you installed Hello1024, and I am disappointed that there are people who have visited here as guests, found out about the VM, then set about not to test Office 2007 Beta 2 but to wreck the VM.

Should you decide to keep it running, PM me with the username and password: this would allow you to keep a strict watch on what tasks I perform on the VM, and if found unacceptable, you can remove the account. I can say that I am bound by a Microsoft NDA from 1998, in perputuity.

When I myself can get back there to fix it, I will try to open it up again, although I like the idea of letting everyone have access so I was thinking of a system that has a scripted "reset" back to default settings so when anyone messes it up it's only 24 hours till it's fixed

Maybe you could limit it to people who ask for an account? That way if people did mess up you could ban them. I guess the downside is that you would be bombarded with PMs from people asking for access.
