Hum
SHANGHAI, China - Doctors in Shanghai on Tuesday were considering surgery options for a 2-month-old boy born with an unusually well-formed third arm. Neither of the boy's two left arms is fully functional and tests have so far been unable to determine which was more developed, said Dr. Chen Bochang, head of the orthopedics department at Shanghai Children's Medical Center. "His case is quite peculiar. We have no record of any child with such a complete third arm," Chen said in a telephone interview. The boy, identified only as "Jie-jie," also was born with just one kidney and may have problems that could lead to curvature of the spine, local media reports said. Jie-jie cried when either of his left arms was touched, but smiled and responded normally to other stimuli, the reports said. Chen said doctors hoped to work out a plan for surgery, but the boy's small size made it impossible to perform certain tests that would help them prepare. Media reports said other children have been reported born with additional arms and legs, but in those cases it was clear what limb was more developed. Chen's hospital is one of China's most experienced in dealing with unusual birth defects, including separating conjoined twins. source Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/465774-surgery-planned-for-baby-with-three-arms/ Share on other sites
drshdw
Front left looks a bit better..but the back left arm seems to have more bicep/tricep mucles..and half and half of each arm would suck. Wonder which one they'll take out.. drshdw
The back one looks like a better one to remove. Yeah, but it also seems like the one in front has been pushed forward a lot too..hopefully they can adjust for that as well. bob_loblaw
I can imagine the face on the doctor when the baby came out. Sheer horror, like an alien or monster. That sucks for the kid. Don't this stuff result because of inbred or (if you had an imagination) genetic mutation? Black Hawk
What if it's just a small evolutionary step? I can think of alot of things a male can do with a third hand. I've seen some wax figures portraying the effects of mercury poisoning and other things, from the renaissance. Quite disturbing. either that or it could just be a fluke. Neztea
Wow, That would be a bitch to choose which arm to take or which arm to not take..... can you say Spider Baby... 2 different bracnhes of nerves and 2 different sets of muscles... thats quite a feat... Probably a screw up in the embrylogical development by some outside influence.... In the article it says that the babies respond to stimuli in each of the left arms.... So... 2 different braches that go the same area (plexus)..... I actually wonder when the baby moves one of its arms, it automatically does the same with the other, like a mirrored action, cause it would be sweet if that child can move each arm individually. They said on the News, doctors may use parts of one arm to make the other as close to normal as they can, using microsurgery. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/465774-surgery-planned-for-baby-with-three-arms/#findComment-587561859 Share on other sites
Dotdot
God bless im and I wish all the Doctors the ut-most of luck and success in performing the operation. A lot of the time with this type of birth defect, well those that involve extra limbs, conjoined twins etc its not the initial op that is the means to an end but rather follow up operations and complexitys that come afterwards. There was a girl born in the last 5yrs or so with an extra fully formed head that seemed to smile and blink, doctors were successful in removing it but it was later discovered that the childs brain had pressure to it where the head had been removed after the blood vessels began to bleed into the head. This caused more damage and Im unsure wether shes still alive, but if she is shes now severly brain damaged. Its a shame how nature can throw a curve ball sometimes :( Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/465774-surgery-planned-for-baby-with-three-arms/#findComment-587561906 Share on other sites

remix17
Personally I find it cruel that babies with genetic mutations such as these are allowed to live. They will never have normal healthy/happy life. They should be put to sleep instead and saved from inevitable suffering. You have to understand everyone is different. No matter what, how bad they look, they still deserve a good normal life same as us. Some people have genetic-based mistakes on them like they can't feel pain, they sweat easily, they grow extra limbs. But many of people with tese lead a very normal life and so should this baby boy. In turn I find surgury an invasion of the boy's decision. Let him decide for himself. If he's perfectly healthy there's no point in needing surgury. I have a born defect in my right eye (cataract, "staar" in dutch) wich blocks about 75% of my right view. In total i can only see about 60% of what normal people can see and so i always have my head tilted a bit to the right... should i have been put down? has caused me a lot of problems but getting laser sugery soon. (Once i'm brave enough ... believe it or not ... i'm affraid to see the extra 40%) An collegue of mine has one short arm and one long arm. Doesn't effect him that much ... he adepted ... so have I. Should he be put down ? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/465774-surgery-planned-for-baby-with-three-arms/#findComment-587563146 Share on other sites

Do they go need down too, just because it takes them longer to remember certain things(like me) or those that need too much attention? If some of this is genetic, then it means this could be passed down for generations.... and multiply. Soon instead of one person having the problem, all their descendants would have the problem. This was not the way it was a few hundred years ago. Which is why our gene pool is so dirty. However, I would agree to let those people reproduce if when they have kids they allow their children's DNA to be manipulated to screen out these defects, or diseases they could get later in life.
