[LOF]skinnylegs
MAC's are nice toys, but windows machines are for power usersOnce again we have someone who feels the need to speak yet has nothing to say. ;) Allow me to interpret. What he said..... MAC's are nice toys What he really meant to say..... "Mac's are really nice and I spend the better part of my life on aqua-soft.org trying to make my PC desktop look like OS X so I can pretend I have one." What he said..... but windows machines are for power users that like to game What he really meant to say..... "I don't feel shame when I walk around with a dremel in my pocket and an anti-static wristband on my arm. Errr.....that's when I'm not in my basement pretending to be a dwarf fighting other "power users" who are pretending to be elves." :D Edited June 20, 2006 by [LOF]skinnylegs
PyX
Can you explain how I actually NEVER searched for drivers on my mac? Microsoft CAN bundle applications with Windows - not Microsoft ones because it's against the antitrust statements or something - but apps made by other companies. Even if apple is a growing company, it doesn't have problems with antitrust yet.

Andrew Lyle Global Moderator Posted June 21, 2006 Global Moderator Share Posted June 21, 2006 i seriously HATE those mac ads. they have gotten to the point where they actually **** me off. the one about the viruses? HOW many viruses still effect pc's? ahh not 10,000! i would say 97% are blocked and fixed. the one where they say the pictures and movies are better on a Mac? that might be true, to an extent.. you get a top of the line video card for a PC, and BAM.. mac looks like ****. the one where they say the hardware is cheaper.. LIKE **** IT IS! the way the young hip guy is up against a business suit.. how lame. you can only make yourself look better, by bashing the big guys huh apple. I feel bad for clueless consumers, looking to buy a new computer these days, especially if they see these ads. People will spend hundreds of dollars on a mac, only to find out the lack of support on software, and people will end up hating computers even more, just makes me like a little harder. crimsonhead
The way the people at the apple stores dress ****es me off lol. and some of them know nothing and look the stuff up. They should hire actual mac gurus... I'd rather them dress like gman, briefcase and all. That would be sweet. :p
stadsport
Most of the arguments in this thread are extremely lame. For example, the PC user looks like and old, pastey loser. The Mac guy is young and good-looking. This is called marketing, and they're trying to make it seem like Mac is the better choice here. You see, the whole objective of a commercial/advert is to make it seem as if their product is better, in attempt to get people to buy it. Also, whoever said ~97% PCs are protected against malware: What universe do you live in? Most PC users still download porn dialers in Internet Explorer and click "YOU WON A FREE IPOD *details apply" ads without a second thought. Maybe 97% of Neowin users protect their computers, but most people don't. I won't deny that the ads are stupid. They are. Incredibly stupid. But they're ads, of course they're stupid! How many of you have ever seen a Taco Bell commercial? Those things make me want to stab myself in the eye with a pencil, but they're just ads. If you're seriously getting upset about a TV advertisement, turn off your TV and read a book. Just try not to get mad at that too!

That's not Microsoft's fault, rather the negligence of the user, hence why software is not covered under OEM warranties for PC's.

poorman
Apple never makes rational advertisements. They all use the reality distortion field (emotional/cool ploy) to make you feel like an idiot if you don't use their products. The switch advertisements are better and make more sense. [LOF]skinnylegs
This flame war has gone on long enough - can a mod please close this. I think an easier solution would be for you to simply direct your attention to a different thread. ;) Apple is trying to sell a product and *obviousy* their adds will be biased. Is that so hard to accept? I will admit that most of the adds are a bit over-the-top but there is certainly truth in every add. For instance, the latest add on the website points out that you can do more fun stuff out-of-the-box with a Mac. As a Mac and PC owner I'd have to say this is pretty darn accurate. Macs come bundled with quite a bit of software that you won't find on a PC including Garage Band, iDVD, Photobooth and iWeb just to mention a few. Certainly you can add similar applications on your PC but then that wouldn't be an out-of-the-box experience now would it?
Matt T
Skinnylegs, I'm not flaming the Mac - I thought my avatar would have made that obvious. I started this thread so people could discuss the ads - 90% of people have either criticized the ads with no constructive input or simply flamed - so I want it closed, or at least properly moderated. So, if people shoot holes in claims made by a company, it's flaming? No one here has said you're an idiot for using a Mac, so no one has been flamed. Are you saying we are not allowed to criticize now? Ironic that the article about OSX 10.4.7 was about updates and bugfixes the Mac never needs. Zombi
Weird, what part of opening the box and following the HUGE colour-coded paper that tells them where to plug their USB keyboard and mouse confused them? Was it the extra detail of plugging in the monitor that threw them for a loop? Or the part at boot where it says, "Press any key to continue", not once but TWICE even? Man, I sure needed a nap after all of that heavy thinking when I did it, I'll tell you that. Smaller market share = bashing in advertising. Burger King does it (or just outright copies McD), Pepsi does it (Pepsi taste tests compared to Coke) and Apple does it (PCs suck, we don't). Smaller or big they all do it whenever they feel threatened; I know Microsoft launched a campaign bashing Linux in the past. As for these ads, I liked the first one while the other 2s were not that funny to me.
Beastage
The problem with these ads is that even non-techies can easily call BS on them. "What? I can download all my family trip photos, make slide shows, burn dvds, etc... So what's all the fuss about these Mac things?" or "Uhh, I already have Windows on my PC. So you can put Windows on a Mac too? What's the point if I already have that?" etc, etc. Anyways, that's my problem with them. Not that I have anything against Apple. When I had XP running on my iMac I'd get BSODs too, which was odd because I never seemed to get them when I had a PC. Dunno if the drivers aren't up to snuff yet or what. Exactly these ads are just bad, the viewer can smell the hypocrisy and the patronizing attitude of Apple from the start and those are 2 things you don't want to put in ads
hairyjohnson
Certainly you can add similar applications on your PC but then that wouldn't be an out-of-the-box experience now would it? well since a Mac is extremley more expensive than a PC I can see why they have the extra software bundled with it. Let Dell bundle some of the that same type of software and the point would be moot. From what I can gather, buying OSX seperatly does not include these extra applications. You get them when you buy a complete system.

No, most actually have to do with claims made in the ads, with discussion of those following the posts. What are you accusing people of being, fanboys of NOT Apple? Everyone has an opinion, and a lot of people's opinions in this thread, including Mac users, are that Apple went too far in recent days to tout their system at the expense of accuracy. This is exactly what I'm talking about - what does this have to do with any part of this topic? You're going off topic and contributing nothing to the thread.
