As a parent and an IT professional I am often asked how best to keep kids safe when using a computer. Here are some steps I recommend to ensure that your kids are safe on the Internet.

Many of us have children who use the internet constantly for chatting with their friends, emailing, or even doing homework. I know that when I was growing up, I had my own personal computer, however that was before the Internet when BBS where the internet. Things change, and now more than ever it is important to monitor, secure and generally keep kids safe online.

You give the reader a good idea of basically what needs to be done, but the article does not go in-depth on how to do specific things, like say, how to ensure that the parent is the only administrator. The article also fails to mention Internet filters! It's a good start, but it needs a lot more content.

First off all, bittorent clients isn't a strong indicator for illegal downloads. It is just a file distribution system, I use it all the time for transfering a large file over to a network of people. Yes, it can also be used to illegaly pirate software, music, and such. So talk to your kid about what he is using it for before you go and bash him because you think you know all the purposes for it are. This isnt directed at the starter of the post, it is directed to the general audience for an informational base.

This is year 2006, kids dont keep their history. Hell they dont keep anything. They know how to clear everything. So dont be surprised when you look at the history and other assorted folders and you find them blank. They dont want their parents coming in and seeing what sites, what they have done, ect. . Why bother with telling them if they delete their history again then they will be banned from the computer or something of the sort. Just get some Parental Control software. Im not saying that you should go and download Parental Controls. Why not talk to your son/daughter about their online habits. What they do, Who they talk to, ect.. I think their needs to be some sort of trust bond between you and your son/daughter.

Isn't it the anarchy cookbook? Yeah it is potentially dangerous. I mean most kids are smart enough not to follow anything in that cookbook, but if it falls into the wrong hands, like some twisted emo kid then it's very serious. A lot of stuff in that cookbook is very interesting, but I stopped reading because it was just too risky to follow any instructions in that book.

that's a bit short... also better break it into categories with big headings of what to do, then explain them indepth.

Brandon - or just terminate the process tree...

and in terms of "parental control" I recommend AGAINST any spying or monitoring software. psudo-firewall software that blocks inappropriate sites should be used while the kid is young, and even that should be removed when they get older (more responsible) and instead good communication & education should be used. "Indicators" mean nothing, people say if your kid has this or that, or dont have this or that, he's up to something bad, well, that's not the case. Also, it's pretty pointless for a parent to try and enforce these things onto their kid if they dont even know as much as the kid, I see a lot of the time it's the kid lecturing adults on net safety.

Kids will see porn if they really want to see it. Kids will see violent videos if they really want to see it. Kids will download illegal content if they really want to download it.

The best way to keep your kids safe online is just have a nice hard cold talk with them about what they cant and can do on the internet.

I happened to find this amazing free self contained[no installation required] browser which can be found here: KidRocket Kids Browser

My 8 year old daughter loves it. It has old style arcade games along with 23 websites such as Disney and PBS Kids that they can browse.

It is worth checking out for younger kids.

cheers, ~pawprint~
