I can't even get that far!!!! I try and nothing... I get a image on my screen as if my video card just overheated or died... what gives?? No like my hardware??

Asus A8N-SLi Premium

Athlon 64 3500+

WD SATA HDD

Crucial Balistix Ram

ok just scary thats all i freaked out a bit as you can tell but damn

i need all that and i havent installed yet...

pretty neat for a install program that i can use the os basically

damn cool

let em explore ubuntu i used suse before but this looks like a cool build

after install how can i enabled that XFG 3d effects stuff

Yep, probably a lot of data near the end that has to be moved to the part you're keeping for your windows partition. How much free space was there still on your windows drive before the resize? If it was close to the 15gigs you'll now be using for linux, the resizing can take a while.

I didn't know that gparted could resize ntfs partitions now. Good to know

Edit: I think you mean XGL, right? there are some good tutorials on compiz.net and on http://easylinux.info/wiki/Ubuntu_dapper

yes its done now

phew!

i was glad i had internet and all to eat the time away

i am now installing and surfing instead of watching a a progress bar

as my first ubuntu use two thumbs up

i know other build may have this but im just experincing it first time and its cool as hell

vista and osx should copy the live desktop so people can play game and **** whiel installing

and yea thanks for the link

but i do have a question

1. whats the difference of gnome vs KDE which is better... i love eye candy GUI's im confused, does one not work with the new linux effects (i.e. wobble windows and stuff)?

2. where can i go to change this ugly ass theme? like i said i like eye candy

3. what the rule of thumb on swap space.... how big should it be ? i had the system auto do it but i woudl rather manually do it.. so i gave 15 gigs and let it auto do it .. i made a ext3 and swap i did auto cause i didnt know how much swap i should make from 15 gigs... or is it have to do with how much memory you have?

4. i gonan force my self to use this OS for a bit , can i run window games such as Lord of the rings 2 battle for middle earth at good speeds. like a emu or pass through?

thanks please let me know everythign else they mad really easy... i mean the install tool is easy but since it was auto i cant tell how much swap it got ... i just want to know so i could manually do it

again thanks for the help guys

Reg. the partitions, this is a good read: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/partitioning.html.

You can get compiz (xgl) by a single click using AB: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=225967.

For eye candy, try the links given in http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=226957.

For a quicker and thorough response, post at http://www.ubuntuforums.org/ (as well).

Choosing between between gnome and KDE is mostly a personal preference, although I've found gnome a bit easier to set up and to work with. Both are able to work with XGL.

To install new themes in gnome (I assume you're still using gnome after a fresh ubuntu install) try installing gnome-art. You can download a lot of themes easily with that.

For the swap: I don't know really. Mine is set to ~650megs (I've let the ubuntu installer choose the swap size) and my machine has been on for some days know and it's now using ~20megs...

To install windows games, have a look at Wine (free) or Transgaming Cedega (not free)
