adwin
It's nice that Neowin should make a contribution to the GNU/Linux community. But for a large and knowledgeable community like Neowin, it would be better to use something like LinuxFromScratch / build it from the ground up. I don't really like it when yet another distro emerges which itself is based on yet another one. If you're releasing a distro, you really must know your stuff, and building a GNU/Linux from the ground up isn't that hard. I'm not flaming you, I'm simply suggesting that you get some good quality. :) Debian is great distro, but you can make an even better one, with optimizations YOU think suitable. I'm thinking about individual package options, CFLAGS, etc... Well, if you get my idea, I hope my "suggestion" doesn't go to the drain. Anyway, good luck. kinetix63 Veteran Posted August 14, 2006 Veteran Share Posted August 14, 2006 Adwin - first off, congrats on your first post. The points you raised are quite valid, however it has been discussed at great length within the community before this project started. In order to get a product out the door, modifying an existing distro was always going to be the easiest option for us to take. We are well aware that the Morphix base we are using can only take us so far, and I am sure that eventually, some way down the road, we will have to start with LFS and build something from the ground up. But for now, it suits the goals of the project perfectly well to base our Distro on Morphix. We know that the versions of Shift out there right now are not of the best quality, however we are ALL learning as this project progresses, so please bear with us. Hopefully the end result will be worth following us as we go along. kinetix63 Veteran Posted August 14, 2006 Veteran Share Posted August 14, 2006 Hi there, At the moment, there is no x64 version of Shift. The distro is based on Morphix, which does not have an x64 branch available for development at present. 0.3 has not yet been released, however we are still hoping to get it out the door for testing at some stage this week. Barney T. Administrators Posted August 15, 2006 Author Administrators Share Posted August 15, 2006 It's nice that Neowin should make a contribution to the GNU/Linux community. I'm thinking about individual package options, CFLAGS, etc... Well, if you get my idea, I hope my "suggestion" doesn't go to the drain. Anyway, good luck. I totally understand your post. From the early organizational meetings of the Shift team, we have wanted to do a LFS type distro. The issue here is, we have lots of members with varying levels of experience. We want to give everyone a chance to learn on something a bit easier, then once this has been created, make something more substantial with a LFS or Gentoo based distro. Sure, we have some members who could do this now, but the vast majority of folks would be left in the dust. That is not what a community project is all about. So, the answer to your question is, yes, we will do this in the future, once we have good solid Shift editions out there, and everyone is comfortable with the whole distro building process. We'll need to try to get the 64-bit version out (at some time) also, but for now, we want to make what we have work, then move to other arenas.
