And what was your annoyance, sir?

You stated that a particular annoyance sent you retreating back to XP; what was the annoyance in question?

In the case of 5472, I had been using it in semi-production mode (as much as possible, using the same applications I would use, and doing the same tasks), and it actually mostly trumped XP. I now have 5536 in its place. and stability is up over even 5472 (unlike 5472, 5536 installed with no histrionics).

Daemon Tools and/or Alcohol 120% still wont work. I have all my games and software as mdf/mds files instead of sticking CD's in all the time.

Still cant stand the glass look or the fact that the kX drivers wont work on my Audigy card. (An issue I know I'm going to have to live with eventually)

It's running on my laptop right now just fine. Just cant stand it as a primary OS yet.

IMO, don't expect programs like Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120 to work with Vista until those programs release a Vista compatible version. The way those programs work will probably require them to rewrite portions of their code due to the changes MS has made to Vista.

This is true for many system applications because they interact with the OS in a deeper level which means the APIs they depend on tend to have the most changes in new versions of the OS.

I can't install Nokia's pc suite in this build, i get a error 1721 when trying to install the cable driver.

No problem installing Nokia PC Suite V6.8 r20 but Nokia PC Suite can't detect any port to connect to the phone after the installation

Just installed it on a spare laptop hard drive on my laptop, I have to say its the best thing I've seen so far Vista wise a lot of better and you can tell its nearly ready. I look forward to seeing the RC1 suprises.

Installed the latest build. OK, but nothing overwhelming - MS really doesn't just "get" style it seems. Opaque black border and taskbar when a window is maximized? WTF? Why choose a theme then?

A big gripe for me about Aero is that unlike OSX, the contents aren't double-buffered. Sure, window compositing means you no longer get tearing when dragging an active window over another, but try to resize and it's flicker-city. Watch as contents are "repainted", just like in XP. It really looks out of place in a composited desktop, Apple has only had this going since what - OSX 10.1 for pete's sake?

Cleartype as well has seen virtually no improvement. The problem is that while it works very nice for small fonts, there's no general AA applied to medium-large fonts. Start typing a medium sized font, and you can see quite a bit of aliasing. Aside from not looking like what you would get on paper, it just looks ugly - they've had plenty of time to fix this since XP.

Flip3D is looking better - still as useless as ###### on a bull compared to Expose. Just copy the damn thing MS.

The way the whole background flashes to black whenever you have to validate an application for admin access is also damn grating. I really hope there will be a way to change that. I know the app needs elevation - the dialog popped up right in front of me, dammit. No need to flicker the entire desktop several times.

BTW, anyone know how to change the sampling rate of PS/2 mice in this build? MS has seemingly set it at 60hz for some idiotic reason.

How did you get the glass clear like that? I thought they changed it to being blue which I hate.

Glass has always been customizable....at least...As far back as I can remember. (This screenshot is from one of last year's builds. The interface is a little different, but the same options are present.)

Same with my 5384 bulid.i'm sure it looks the same in the newer bulids. Why can't they just add the glass or at least polish up the black a bit jezz

I agree, every once in a while my screen flikers and then switches to the ugly scrap medal then back to aero. It may be a memory ishue as i have 512 but i dont know... I will be upgrading to 1 or even 2 GB soon :D

but they chose not to. instead making us mad with stuff they know makes us mad but they do it anyway.

Something just bugs me. In the ratings for RAM, it says it based on memory calculations per minute. Isn't the rating to be used for games, so people can see on if it can run? Well, since when has it said on the requirements for a game: CPU: 2.0 Ghz | RAM: 2.2 billion memory calculations per minute. Doh!

And you would think that the official minimun required specs for Vista would be rated 1.

Wow, ok...I am impressed.

Via the Computer Management area you can shrink/expand a partition dynamically (without having to reboot). Perhaps this feature is in XP SP2 (I will check later), but I am pretty sure this is brand new for Vista.

Anyways, great and very useful feature...we won't really have a need for applications like Partition Magic any longer.
