Linkinfamous
Via the Computer Management area you can shrink/expand a partition dynamically (without having to reboot). Perhaps this feature is in XP SP2 (I will check later), but I am pretty sure this is brand new for Vista. Nope. It's brand new in Vista. It's great, too. Hurmoth
Did my Memtest - no faulty RAM.Now there are more people on Longhorn Forums having the MEMORY_MANAGEMENT errors. Seems like a Showstopper to me. :( Sorry to hear that. Have your filed a bug report with the beta team? If you haven't, I would. Randolph
I have a question, what is the lightest color the taskbar and start menu can be? See I really dislike the dark taskbar and start menu, can someone be kind enough to post a screen shot of the taskbar and menu with a light background/transparency with this Vista build? "Frost"? xxdesmus
Wow...speech recognition was "prettied up" a bit also from the last build. xxdesmus
Anyone else getting this weird bug with the speech recognition? You say "Start" so that it opens the start menu, then "show numbers" so you can then select an item minimized on the taskbar...except it doesn't display the numbers it just enters "show numbers" in the start menu's search field. WinFreak
Take a look at this. The animation for the minimization of windows has changed slightly, but is much greater in quality. Previously when you would minimize, there would be small black corners (finishing a rough image), making it look square, with no shadow. The animation now includes a shadow, and maintains the same image quality as Flip 3D. I noticed this with the AnimationsShiftKey hack enabled. ---Animations Shift Key Hack 1. Open up Regedit. 2. Navigate to HKEY_Current User, Software, and Microsoft, Windows, DWM. 3. Create a new KEY called DWM if it is not aleady there. 4. Create a new DWORD called AnimationsShiftKey inside the DWM folder. 5. Set the new DWORD that you just created to a value of 1. 6. Open task manager, and end DWM, it should restart DWM with the effect enabled. KeR
the one thing that is a real disappointment is the search in Vista, after using OS X its a real let down...also the lack of a system wide spell checker is weird too :/ As someone who has used OS X and Vista, I can tell you for sure that vista is last years technology, at least for the Mac users...there is absolutely nothing I havent seen before, even the GUI, the shadows that the windows have, the minimize, max animation, everything reminds me of OS X. kaiwai
Do you like him more? He can have his way with me any day of the week ;) It looks a bit like Plastik from KDE, with slightly different buttons used for the windows controls; nice to see they've moved away from the hideous bubble like fisher price thing going which they had in Windows XP. the one thing that is a real disappointment is the search in Vista, after using OS X its a real let down...also the lack of a system wide spell checker is weird too :/ As someone who has used OS X and Vista, I can tell you for sure that vista is last years technology, at least for the Mac users...there is absolutely nothing I havent seen before, even the GUI, the shadows that the windows have, the minimize, max animation, everything reminds me of OS X. True, but even then, if you don't like Vista, install a *NIX and use KDE, and you get a system wide spell checker which is available to all KDE applications, out of the box. Grope for Luna
Not only have they neutered the Quick Launch by disabling removal from the task bar, but they've also gotten rid of the links bar in Explorer. They were great to use as app launchers. JohnMcClane
Am I the only one who has problems with the sorting algorithm of media player?! When I am in details view and in my 5 star ratings and I click on sort by contributing artist (other fields: title, length, genre, playcount) the list is not sorted correctly. For example a few songs of P. Diddy, Massari, Voltio,... come right after "Zion & Lennox", thats not possible when you sort ascending :p I do not have the problem in other listings (songs, artists,...), just in ratings and the problem did not occur in 5472. Does anyone know how to contact Microsoft about this bug?! I don't mean just remove the quick launch, I mean to move it to the side of the screen. That feature has been gone since I can remember. As for the Links bar, it's in IE but it's not in Explorer. You used to be able to enable it by right clicking on the menu bar and selecting it - now only "Lock the Toolbar" is there. +Elі Subscriber² Posted August 27, 2006 Subscriber² Share Posted August 27, 2006 I love the fact that you can now select different sizes for the default aero cursor, you can pick between "Normal" "Large" and "Extra Large" I myself love the extra large size since I have a 21 widescreen LCD and sometimes the cursor kind of gets lost lol. Also did anyone notice there's a new sound that plays when you reboot the computer? it's a nice sound too. btw here's two screenshots of my desktop :) Bigger Version Bigger Version Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/489661-build-5536-released/page/12/#findComment-587825065 Share on other sites
ic1male
Am I imagining things or was there an animated background for the login screen on beta 2? I think it was the same as the aurora screen saver. Doesn't appear to animate on this pre-RC1 build which is a shame as I thought that was extremely cool. SeBsZ
Wow. That's all I can say about this build, wow. The last build I tried was build 5472, I was extremely happy with it. One thing I didn't like about it was that I could not get my Wireless PCI card to work, so I had to plug in a cable which was not nice. The drivers were installed, but "The device could not be started". In 5536, it installed and works absolutely fine! Fantastic! Speed. What? Speed. Yes, the speed of this build is absolutely wonderful. No lag, everything just happens when I click it. Installation took a mere 34 minutes. Boot up time are even better. Compared to XP, booting into the desktop on a new installation from pressing my power button takes exactly 1 minute and 21 seconds. With build 5536, it takes just 54 seconds, which is fantastic. I have not see a single crash since I started using this build. Flip 3D is just great, no more jagged edges. All in all, this build is great. It is definitely RC1 quality, way to go Microsoft! :woot: Of course, before RTM I'd like to see a proper bootscreen as well as some new sounds. By the way, is it correct that a couple of months ago I read about a "hack" that enabled some kind of new boot screen in an old build? Does that still work in this build? What does this boot screen look like? Thanks! Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/489661-build-5536-released/page/12/#findComment-587825795 Share on other sites
