FusionXN1
Anyone tried Vista x64 with one of these CPUs, I feel like testing 64-bit as Microsoft says IA32 and IA64 is supported in 64-bit vista...
coth
afair vista 64 bit edition mean support of x86-64, not IA64 unlike in xp and 2003, where x64 edition mean support of x86-64 and 64 bit edition mean support of IA64
FusionXN1
So 32bit should be the same as in the 32bit os now then? And - 64bit - does it work on EM64T?
LuckyKnight
Microsoft says IA32 and IA64 is supported in 64-bit vista... I think you are getting a bit muddled up here. The Intel IA-32 architecture is what is commonly used today (usually referred to as x86) on most CPUs (e.g. Intel Pentium IV, Core 2 Duo, AMD Athlon 64, AMD Athlon 64 X2 etc..). The IA-64 is for an entirely different CPU microarchitecture known as EPIC. It is not compatible with IA-32, and you cannot buy it from your local computer store. AMD decided to add 64-bit support to the IA-32 architecture. This is known as AMD64 (also known as x86-64). Intel calls it EMT64. The 32-bit version of Windows Vista will run on both IA-32 based CPUs and on EMT64/AMD64 CPUs but of course you will only be in a 32-bit mode. You cannot run 64-bit compiled code. The 64-bit version of Windows Vista will run on any CPU supporting AMD64 or EMT64. The Athlon 64, Core 2 Duo etc.. It will not run on IA-64, that would require a completely different version from Microsoft. The 64-bit version will allow you to run 64-bit compiled code. jimbo11883
Most, if not all of your apps *should run on Vista 64-bit. *Some applications that install device drivers may not work, such as backup, utility and anti-virus apps.
