Slimy
This is the section for customizing windows vista, themes and so on. Vista Beta Place is better suited for this type of news, and there's already a thread there: https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=492256 Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/492256-ati-have-posted-rc1-drivers/page/2/#findComment-587845657 Share on other sites

Lexcyn
MS would rather you use Direct3D I realize that but a lot of developers and programs use OpenGL (3d rendering programs for example). To leave out something like that is kind of shooting yourself in the foot so to speak. I mean, it's not really hard for them to include it like they did in XP. Oh well, obviously there will be something to add into Vista that will support OpenGL ... it just sucks that we're gonna have to wait. xti
Anyone else having issues with getting full Aero? I have a Radeon x800 256MB, both the default RC1 drivers and the ATI RC1 drivers yield a Graphics rating of 1.0 and Gaming Graphics rating of 2.0... so I'm running Aero basic right now (no glass, no flip3d, etc.) In Beta 2, I had a rating of 3, whats the deal? It's been known since Vista Beta 2? (im guessing) that the X800 series have problems with the AMD (ATI) drivers. Just like how the 7950GX2 is having troubles. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/492256-ati-have-posted-rc1-drivers/page/2/#findComment-587847680 Share on other sites

kl33per
Can you people stop posting rubish about OpenGL. Here's a rule you should follow, if you don't know what you're talking about, don't say anything. Here's what's happening with OpenGL support. Just like in XP there are two kinds of OpenGL support, software and hardware. Software support is in-built by Microsoft and is locked at OpenGL 1.4, meaning all OpenGL calls are converted to equivalent DirectX calls. Hardware support comes from Independent Hardware Vendors (IHV's - nVIDIA, ATi) writing an ICD for OpenGL. What does this all mean? It means that providing both ATi and nVIDIA choose to provide OpenGL support in their products (both have stated they will), everything will work fine, just like on XP with full hardware support and no software rendering or conversion to DirectX calls. Previously, the use of any kind of OpenGL would cause the DWM (the pretty Aero graphics layer) to become disabled and revert to a GDI (i.e. Win XP era) rendering method, but this issue has been resolved. The only issue left standing, when will ATi provided OpenGL drivers. Until then, stop blaming poor OpenGL support on Microsoft. OpenGL; Quake II runs perfect at 1600 res. :) GLQuake on the other hand runs really choppy. br
Two issues I have found with these drivers. Maybe someone can confirm the same happens to them or that it doesn't. Perhaps someone has a solution, otherwise just a heads up for everyone else to look out for. 1) I have a TV and a second display monitor. If I select the TV to "clone" the PC Monitor I can only run BOTH displays in the maximum resolution supported by the TV! In XP I could run the PC monitor in a higher resolution and the TV would just display as much as it could and then move if I moved the mouse to an area not covered. Now Vista forces my monitor to a lower resolution so they match. Sucks and I can't find a way to stop it! So clone mode is out D: 2) Even if I tell the ati control panel to display videos in "theatre" mode I can't full screen them on the TV without manually fullscreening them on either my PC monitor (clone mode) or on the extended desktop itself. Again in XP I could run clone mode, and simply playing a movie on the main window would force it into fullscreen on the TV. Very handy for watching a movie while still using MSN etc. Can't get it to behave now. Manually I've got a workaround by running extended desktop, moving the player to that side, then fullscreening it, but this is extra steps and annoys me. I liked the clone mode way. Are these problems just mine or do they happen to others too?
