Forever Changing Post Counts

Recommended Posts

Hi, some members may of noticed their post count (including my own) dropped, in some cases (like mine) its 100's. This is because we have just purged comments from our database.

In total we deleted about 35,000 comments and 45,000 poll votes to clean up and speed up our sql database.

For future reference we *can* disable post counts on comments all together so that this doesnt happen again. Forum posts have been unaffected by all of this.

Our server can cope with everything but we do need to streamline everything as best as possible and this was done by reading and following up on this at the mysql website:

One of the most basic optimisation is to get your data (and indexes) to take as little space on the disk (and in memory) as possible. This can give huge improvements because disk reads are faster and normally less main memory will be used. Indexing also takes less resources if done on smaller columns.

So we hope you understand.

Neobond: Does this really help? We hae never purged old posts or comments...

Our database is 200 megs at the moment.

Well, our forum db is 200 meg or so, but that's irrelevant. The reason it's such a big deal is the number of records needed for indexing and selecting. Having to search through a thousand versus a few hudred thousand records to build a page is a lot better :)

Actually they have pruged old comments before. I think last year they did it.

lol... i'm never going to get to 2000

First there was the post recount... before that I had 1810's... after the recount I was down into the 1690's, I got it back up to 1743.. and now I'm back down to 1600's... lol. :D

With a miniscule post count that would get me right embarassed in the Neowin showers I reckon this forum cold water ain't gonna affect me much :D

Good job I don't think that post count and 1337ness ain't inextricably linked really.
