AOL Releases AIM 6.0 Beta

The Problems I have noticed with the new aim (I installed it on my other PC)

1) There is no option for changing connection, like in the old aim version. (Such as port, etc...)

2) The GUI Cannot be changed...but i can live with that

3) When you go to away, I can't figure out how I can make it display the msgs i got while away. Just says "You have (2) messages", and when I press im avaliable its gone.

4) No comment system for the screen names on the contact list (this is where i had to uninstall the new AIM) I use the comments for a. real name of the person. b. numbers. so the new aim loses all my old comments.

After turning off login/logoff sounds, AIM managed to stay open all night so I guess it was the sound playback causing me to crash out. I'm going to try turning on default sounds while leaving expression sounds off to see if that changes anything.

Did you have custom sounds or were they just the default sounds?

With expression sounds on, obviously it was custom sounds coming from users, though when i chose the "play this sound" option, I used the default AIM sounds. With default sounds on, I made it through the night, so now I'm turning back on expression sounds and am waiting to see how it holds up.

Well, it does look like this new beta fixes my buddy list count bug, where before it was telling me I had for example, 98 out of 45 buddies online. I will give it another day or so to see if it appears again, but it does seem like that was fixed.

Miracles do happen. ;)

How long before we get a new build with hopefully a much improved UI? Just need to change those minimize, maximize, and close buttons on the chat windows and the main program window.

We don't know. Whenever it's released. A new build will probably be out really soon.

I think one of the features myself and many people I talked to missed in the new versions of triton and beta 6.0 is the fact that idle buddys weren't grayed out. If there was a way we could switch between that and having the zzz icon next to them, that would be great. Also, an option for changing I'm box colors from that harsh white to gray would be cool too. The reason I never used triton was because of the cruddy UI. It wasn't soft on the eyes and easy to manipulate like the classic aim UI. I like where it is going, however, more so then triton. I think we all can agree on that.

After using it for over a week, I have a few suggestions.

1) It has been discussed already, but the UI has to be fixed in terms of where to place icons (AIM logo on top left corner of the program) and the colors of the buttons.

2) I like the new approach taken with sharing pictures. However, I find it very inconvenient that it opens a separate window just to view the pictures. A suggestion is to possibly integrate the window to the IM window in a way that on the left side of the joined windows, you can IM the person and on the right side of the window, the pictures are displaying.

3) Option to disable notifications when away under preferences :p

4) On the IM window, the send bar should be either moved from where it is, or preferrably the buttons should be made smaller so it doesn't interfere with the window.

The whole idea of the separate window is so that you don't have to maximize the IM window to see a photo even reasonably well. I'm thankful that it's completely broken out of the IM window.

That's when an implementation of double-clicking steps in. If you want to see it in its full size, a single double click should enlarge the picture possibly using the built-in Windows Picture Viewer. The only problem I had with the way it was before was that you could not see it in its full size unless it was saved. If an option of double clicking to enlarge it was implemented, it would work much nicer.

But it also made having a conversation at the same time almost impossible because it shrunk the conversation area to almost nothing.

Something I just noticed as well is that when you group your groups by alphabetical name, it doesn't stay like that and you start to get people with the screen name beginning with A towards the bottom. The only way to fix that is to go to view and group them again.

Before this beta, this never happened :pinch:

Could someone *PLEASE* provide AOL in one big damn file, stop this 'download manager' garbage, and just include it in one big file for download, like how MSN is provided.

Oh, and stop loading up my browser when I log in; log in and leave me alone.
