ZonoBurk
That client will end up as other light editions, like icq did...Lite until they start adding features (bloat) again  I don't think so. There are some great people behind this project. Toology
I think it would be better if it were not skinned. Not only would it fit in with a user's visual style but it would probably make it even lighter. neufuse Veteran Posted October 4, 2006 Veteran Share Posted October 4, 2006 blah.. its a good start but when I think of a light client I want the following only Clean buddy list like ET has Profiles, simple text and link only ones smilie faces! Ability to color text forground/background, and change my font ability to view a profile like old AIM 4 had Direct connect (IMAGE MESSAGEING ONLY! NOTHING ELSE) Drop the themes! you want a real lite client? dont spend resources on a theme, let windows do the themeing, then at least it will match the OS that's all I really need this is a step in the right direction for us that hate AIM 6 though Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/500351-aol-testing-light-version-of-aim/page/2/#findComment-587928659 Share on other sites
IceBrewedBeer
Just found this today and I'm very impressed, not everyone is hyped up about the theme but that's the last thing I worry about in an IM client. I've been using AIMExpress for years do the to the fact that all the AIM client's that I've used are always filles with ridiculous features that i'll never use. This is the only lite AIM client that actually uses the OSCAR protocol without problems. I honestly can't think of any complaints, except one, and that's the native windows theme. Other than that this is great. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/500351-aol-testing-light-version-of-aim/page/2/#findComment-587961502 Share on other sites
DigitalE
Wow, this is really nice. It looks awesome, the simple animations make it look even better, it works awesome, and it has almost all the features that I would need in an AIM client. The only thing that I think it realy needs is buddy icon support and profile viewing. I don't really care about memory usage regarding the theme, since 10MB isn't going to make much of a difference on the 2GB that I have. Everyone seems to think it's "too light". I think it will be just right if they throw in some of the basic emotions like :) :( :p :s :o . What I hear it will get better. ;) EDIT: They have released version 0.30. We've just released Laim 0.30. As you'd expect we've added some of the more basic features, like: -- Buddy List? management (yay!) -- Friendly names -- Basic custom away messages -- Auto-hyperlinking -- Filtering -- Same minimalist design and low memory usage (improvements here and there)! If you peek around you might find some really neat features we've snuck in. Download from the official AIM Lite site. Quillz
It is extremely nice. This is wonderful. I agree. I like AIM 6 as much as the next guy, but it's nice to have a light app running on your notebook or something similar. I hate apps that are java based. I wasn't aware that this was Java based. msing
I switched from AIM 5.5 w/ deadaim. The new features included: Minimalistic interface Aliases Logging Cloning File Transfer Manager (Replaces Direct Connect) are enough for me. No crazy fonts. No need to resize the IM window for obsessively large images sent throught DC. No stupid custom simlie faces. No BS text filling up the context menus. It's a cleaner product overall. I can say that this is my new favorite messaging client, and it's from AOL!. I can't see any other aspect for which this client can be improved on, except for the ability to view profiles. MrCobra
It's still java based. There's other folders in there as well. Code in another folder is for the black theme. The xprt5.dll & xprt6.dll along with the coolcore46.dll have code in them that interpret java code. Wrong thread? You might want to  at yourself there buddy. I merely stated that I don't like apps that are java based. This is certainly one of them. SULAX50
I like where this thing is going, all I need is profiles (simple black and white text only is fine). We are continuing to work on building the AIM Lite experience. We take the feedback we get from you guys, and figure out how to implemented it without adding any significant hit to perf. Profiles for example require almost zero thought wrt perf. I think we have hit upon something really good here with AIM Lite, there are some hidden features in the client that are not "turned on" yet. Enjoy using it and as always keep the great feedback coming. If AOL keeps going in this direction it'll be a complete turn around, customers may even come back =P.On a serious note, The only things I'd like to see is a basic profile entry(black and white works perfectly), and native windows theming. I do however like the style of the theme now but it wouldn't hurt to have that option avaliable. You guys are doing godlike work with this. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/500351-aol-testing-light-version-of-aim/page/2/#findComment-587963198 Share on other sites
InnerGlow
I've been using this for a day or so now and I must say, very good work. rizzle
Right now this is a very early product that only a small handful of developers are working on, some on their free time because they work on other projects. For sure, there are some essential features missing - profile support, sending typing indications (right now you can only see them), and better UI. Sounds are coming - but probably as a plug-in. AIM Lite is written on a new UI platform called Boxely, something which we released very recently (http://www.boxely.com). I have a small write up of AIM lite on my blog here: http://algorizms.blogspot.com/2006/10/7-re...ck-out-aim.html @MrCobra AIM Lite is not Java based. Boxely uses a javascript back end, but as you know, JavaScript is not Java or even related to it. beanboy89
I just finally got around to installing this on my testing machine. It looks great.
