OMG, I got a warning! Now what?

Recommended Posts

Can you please tell us exactly how to go about reporting inappropriate comments on a news article or forum? Who should we notify and how?

Thanks!

For forum posts you can hit the report button under the post in question, for news comments, you'll have to pm a member of staff, it they can't deal with it, they can forward it to the relevent staff member(s) for you.

On the forums, use the "report" button located on every single post. This will create a back log where staff can look over each report and determine if action needs to be taken. Just remember, the action you believe should be taken is not always what will occur.

as a many who has had 5 warnings, and 2 suspensions, and a few minor warnings, i relised that ****ing people off on neowin wasn't worth the time lost here. This community is great and i respect this forum very much. Ive gotten to love coming here daily, reading the news and replying to jokes and helping people out, also asking questions.

trust me guys, you may think it's funny, but neowin is #1 in my books for forums, and not being able to spend time here (suspensions and bannings) isn't fun.

Q. So why does Neowin have rules anyway?

A. Neowin's community rules serve three main purposes.

  1. They protect members from abuse.
Neowin wants members to respect other members at all times. Members should feel free to express their opinions without being personally attacked by online bullies. This is not Survivor:Neowin where the most aggressive member left standing is the winner. Neowin is both diverse and international and thus we are trying to maintain a friendly community here. Thus we do not want to see examples of hatred towards any group (race, sex, orientation, nationality or religion).

How can the 1st bolded part be implemented without enforcing the 2nd bolded part, therefore negating the 1st bolded part?

Members should feel free to express their opinions but without abusing other members, is that so hard to understand? There are plenty of forums that encourage flame-bait, we don't.

No, it isn't hard to understand. I just feel that saying "feel free to exspress your opinions", and then saying "you can't say that" when someone posts something racist or sexist etc negates the point of saying "feel free to express yourself".

Myself, I wouldn't post anything rascist or sexist or whatever (intentionally), and am just asking the questions because I like nit picking. :D

We want members to share their opinions (and to feel comfortable doing so) but not to go so far as to express or promote hatred.

it was said they wont be doing manual reductions... but if it is being done and an admin is reading this. please.. it's been a year and some months now.

i just want to change my name.

I don't mean to be in your business but judging by your avatar aren't you Vice King? How did you change your name if you have a warning?

i had 80 for atleast 6 months i think..

You post that as if you're proud of it... you didn't need to specify what your warning level was at to convey the same point. You should be ashamed and not want to discuss it. If I had a warning I most certainly wouldn't be parading it around. Personally, I'm proud that I can behave maturely and get by without insulting other members or promoting prohibited material - I haven't had any warnings and I intend to keep it that way.

You are forgetting that Shof is a big hard man, his warnings are testament to that ;).

:p

You know what, why do we even need to discuss warnings AT ALL?

My very first warning (or my second...I've been here for too long) was straight from an Admin, and wasn't even CALLED a warning. It was just a quick pm, saying that a note had been attached to my account. No talk of percentages, no e-penis at who has the smallest warning, no fear of 100% = ban.

Heck, it's been said countless times (and even said to me by staff members in pm) that 100% does not equal automatic ban.

Since they really mean nothing except little notes for staff members to read on an individual as a record of their behaviour and breaches of acceptable behaviour, there is no reason in the world for us to even need to KNOW of a warnings system.

Why not just move it back to being a staff-member only thing, and end all of this nonsense?

Brilliant idea, the warning system has caused more good than bad

Well, the warning system is intended to be corrective in nature. It's our hopes that by pointing out inn appropriate behavior, we can guide members within the acceptable posting bounds while still allowing them to express themselves. Unfortunately, some people see a warning as unjust punishment instead of behavioral suggestions. It's part of the job, I guess, but the amount of attacks I've received not only on Neowin, but on my own personal website and other sites around the web, is a bit astounding.

This explains why we show members their warning levels.

I think I last got my 20% back in July or something....scared the hell out of me

This community is awesome and any prospect of me getting the boot was seriously bad.

I'm careful now though, no more spazmatic posting.

Actually we decided to show the warning levels because members were bothering us with requests to see their warning levels. If you search S&FI you'll find a thread asking us to display the warning levels.

Edit, I found this:
