Steffan
New York Giants' RB Tiki Barber announced that he will retire at the end of this season. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2632483 I think he has a couple of more seasons in him. L3thal Veteran Posted October 20, 2006 Veteran Share Posted October 20, 2006 I believe so too. He is only 31 years old and was the leading rusher last year. Someone had to offer him a very good job off the field for him to retire and "consider his future" in terms of new opportunities off the field. mattmatik
Crazy. But, I remember when Edgerrin James said the same thing a few years ago. He told people he didn't need football, he had his finances straight, and he didn't want to be "old" when he left the game. Now he's playing in Arizona, haha. Still, I think Tiki is serious about it. He's never been the kind of guy who spatted worthless crap out of his mouth and he and his brother both have been model citizens both on and off the field. It wouldn't surprise me that, with the kind of easy personality he has and his positive image, Tiki couldn't succeed off the field. I just hope his work on the field continues...he's my #1 fantasy RB! :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/505200-nfl-tiki-barber-to-retire-at-end-of-season/#findComment-587972942 Share on other sites
Bwizzel-B
I think it's especially bad timing for the Giants, since they are only going to get better and better as Eli Manning matures. ranasrule
as a Vikings fanatic i know how Giants fans must be feeling right now....My all time favorite running-back Robert Smith also left at the top of his game after rushing for 1500+ yards in 2000 Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/505200-nfl-tiki-barber-to-retire-at-end-of-season/#findComment-587972984 Share on other sites
BroChaos Veteran Posted October 20, 2006 Veteran Share Posted October 20, 2006 pretty shocking news if you ask me. if the giants get close this year, and hang on to most of their players, i wonder if he will change his mind. without his running game, i really don't think eli would be where he is right now. DirtyLarry Veteran Posted October 21, 2006 Veteran Share Posted October 21, 2006 Very surprised to read this, as I had not heard a thing about it until right now. I definitely think Tiki has at least one to two years left in him without a doubt. As already pointed out, especially since I am a Giants Fan, I definitely question how well they will do without him. He is the only steady factor in an offense that is still struggling to find some kind of identity. Eli is showing some signs here and there, but he still makes some very dumb decisions, showing he has a long way to go still. Without Tiki, this offense as it is right now is not reliable. With all of that said, I can never argue when a pro athelete decides to retire, especially an NFL football player considering how much of a beating they put their body through on a year to year basis. To go out on top of their game, to go out healthy (hopefully), are all things many pro atheletes do not decide to do. Although I want him to stay since they are my team, more power to him and I wish him the best. He is well spoken, a class person off the field and very personable, so I am sure some kind of hosting or an announcing deal is in his immediate future. DreAming in DigITal
Hes making a good choice. Why leave the game all beat up and worn down. Hes still young, rich, and has alot going for him. He'll make a great commentator or analyst so he has plenty of options. I don't think the timing is all that bad for the Giants either. This is going to be a great year for them to draft another RB since there will be tons of good once coming up in the draft. I'm far from a sports fan but Tiki's been doing Fox and Friends every Tuesday morning for almost a year now. Rumor has it Fox Sports would like to have him as well. Sounds like a good move. As soon as I read about his retirement, I figured that is where he was headed.
