how to make the Power button in the Vista start menu shut down the computer

Have you ever wondered how to shut down your Vista- based computer with a single click then doing a few extra clicks? Well today I'm here to show you how do that. I will be also including a few screenshots of the buttons when certin settings are enabled. Lets get started:

Changing your power settings:

With this tip you will need to change your power settings. To do so follow the following steps:

  1. Click the start button
  2. click control pannel
  3. if the control pannel isn't in clasic view, enable clasic view by clicking clasic view on the left hand collum.
  4. double click Power options
  5. Find your power plan and then click "change plan settings"
  6. then click change Advance power settings
  7. Under the list click "Power buttons and lid"
  8. click the "start menu power button
  9. The defalut seting is Sleep, click sleep and chose Shut down. Depending on if you have a desktop or notebook you may need to do that twice.
  10. Click apply then click ok. now click the start menu and your new button should look like this:

Or if you're lazy like me, you can just right click on the desktop and click personalize, then go to screen saver and click on "Change power settings..." on the bottom of the window. But thanks for bringing this to people's attention who have yet to learn how to change their power settings.

well I just hate when I want to shut off my pc I have to click the little arrow and then go to shut down. this way I just click the little red button and it automacly shuts it down...

--jetson-- your right on that part, I guess I could have done that in my main post, but hey both ways are good.

Or better yet, hit the start key, type "power" hit enter, and continue as needed.

No need to even leave the keyboard

Let me say that just coloring the button brown even with the little pop-up description has proven to be a problem for tose who just see a power button and assume that it will shutdown the puter. Thanks for the lil tip. At least it is simple enough to explain to those who "can't read".

Anyone know if their is a way for it to prompt you either for what you want to do or just if you are sure you want to do it. Its annoying when you hit one of the power/logoff buttons on accident.
is ther any way to add restart option....

Yea, I agree. I think Microsoft really overlooked this. I wish there was some way to completely customize those two buttons to anything you want like you can with virtually ever other item in the Start Menu. I also miss the Windows XP shutdown/restart/log off selection screen. I wish they would bring it back for Vista.
