Italian trio have penalties reduced!

Recommended Posts

Juventus have been handed a big boost in their fight to return to Serie A next season after successfully appealing for a reduction to their penalty for involvement in the match-fixing scandal.

The arbitration board of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) - Italy's highest sporting body - gave the club eight points back after they began the season on -17.

The move leaves the undefeated Turin giants just eight points behind Serie B leaders Genoa eight games into the season.

Juve were the only team involved in this summer's scandal demoted to the second tier.

Lazio, Fiorentina and AC Milan also received their verdicts this evening with both Lazio and Fiorentina having their penalties reduced by four.

Lazio, who had originally been docked 11 points, have climbed out of the relegation zone in Serie A as a result.

Fiorentina still remain in the drop zone but they have now cleared their original deficit of 19 points.

The CONI made no change to Milan's penalty of eight points.

Reggina, the fifth club to be involved in the scandal, will have to wait until next month to find out whether their appeal has been successful.

They were docked 15 points at the start of the campaign and are bottom of Serie A.

I think it is pathetic that they have had there penalties reduced after the season has already started. Punishments are punishments, each club broke the rules and everything is being undermined by the fact a team can just appeal and the punishment will be reduced.

They broke the rules, they deserve to be punished, and the sporting bodies should enforce that punishment.

It just makes everything that happened during that trial so pointless and even when it finished we all knew the Italian Clubs would have this happen...this means Juventus will come up this year they are doing so well...funny tho AC Milan didn't get theirs reduced but after all they did get the CL they wanted...cant have it all.

Yeah. I agree once the seaosn starts the punishments should stay. Anyways... this is just crap the whole case. ANyways... it is ITALY you know!

while this CONI arbitration board gave some points back, did any of the trials going on, point deductions, punishments ever make real sense?

i dont recall anyone ever clearly stating "this team was docked these points for these exact reasons"

although something had to be done, its really the players & the fans who suffered as a result of actions from management/executives for the clubs

Would you care to elaborate...?

It's too long... take a look at the Italian newspapers of the last months.

Yeah... just like they were happy for false winnings.

That gives them no excuse to let them escape what they did. If they cheated, they should punish the team and the fans will now avoid voting in the same guy next time there are elections.

Pretty pathetic that the punishment was reduced this far into the season, when the extra 8 points could have a large effect on the layout of the table.

If they are going to punish teams they should be frozen at the start of the season and not changed later on
