Bold_Fortune
Spammers were driving me crazy on my site. I searched and searched for help with this problem. Piecing together information from various sources, I came up with a most helpful approach to attacking this problem. ...Although, I'm sure the Administrators here at Neowin are quite familiar with this approach, I offer it to those who are unaware of it. http://www.bold-fortune.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2233 I am placing this list of Known Disposable Emails Services and Spamming Addresses here for safekeeping...(and because that other thread was getting lengthy). Other site Administrators may find it useful when faced with similar spamming problems should they bump into this post. I will be adding to this list other Spamming Addresses as I uncover them. Instructions: Administrators, turn on Email Validation, so registered members must validate their account via their email. Then go to your Admin CP / MANAGEMENT / Manage Ban Filters. Input the Spamming Email Addresses like so: @spammers.com Some suggest like so: *@spammers.com --using the "*" wildcard in front of the @. (This is the method I personally use.) Some suggest like so: *@*spammers.com -- using the *'s before and after the @. This before and after method didn't seem to work for my site, and I've seen another say the same, but maybe it could work for yours. Select Email Address in the drop down box next to it. (Although, when I first did this, I missed this step, and kept it set at "IP Address" and it did seem to work for me anyway. I have since placed them all under "Email Address".) Click Add New Filter. And Your Done. MrCobra
You might as well add gmail to that list then. I have 50 accounts with 50 invites. No forum or website in general gets a real address from me. johngalt
A good idea. although you'll have to make some sort of provision there to allow 'legitimate' users to register with those addresses, or else ask them to get an alternate email address. I personally use GishIt! to create disposable email addys for non-useful / purchases / general surveys, etc. It makes things quite simple. Bold_Fortune
Yes, johngalt, I understand your point. Things have gotten so out of hand with spam, I'm starting to feel that if these legitimate email providers will do nothing to protect us against spam, I say to heck with them....and new members who use them will just have to get themselves another email provider if they want to join my site. Bold_Fortune
Your welcome, shockz. I feel I owe Neowin a lot, since it was Neowin that allowed me to work publicly for so many years on Slimming Down Windows XP: The Complete Guide So when I think I have something good to offer, I try to share it with Neowin. whitebread
Nice! Thanks :) By the way.... This can easily be imported into Outlook 2003/2007: Create a text file (.txt) in Notepad, copy & paste the list and save it. In Outlook, go to Tools, Options, click the Junk Email button. Go to the Blocked Senders tab. Click the Import from File button, select the .txt file you created. samg
Oh thanks. Just added it to sophos list. There isn't a way in the program to do so, so thought i'd post the way to do it manually! stop both purmessage services on the server go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sophos\MMEx\Config\SMTP in there is "spam Blacklist". Copy the list from above into notepad, then copy it from notepad and paste it into the registry. (without pasting and re copying in notepad, it didn't work) only do this if you are happy you know what you are doing in the registry and i accept no responsibility for this tip. Echilon
Great! People offer free disposable email so they don't get spam from forums which need email validation, then you go and circumvent them and force them to use their real address  Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/518226-ban-known-disposable-emails-services/#findComment-588110577 Share on other sites
-Alex-
Why block all .biz and .info domains? We host quite a few legit domains with those extensions. Bold_Fortune
Why block all .biz and .info domains? We host quite a few legit domains with those extensions. I can understand your point, I really can. But due to the sheer amount of spam accounts signing up with these email domains, I have chosen to do this on my site. Bold_Fortune
So what's stopping the spammers just registering a gmail account and ruining your site that way? :s Nothing I suppose. Popcorned1
It's impossible to stop spam. CAPTCHA, if it can be read by a human then a bot can defently read and bypass it. Blocking all the disposible emails will only slow them down mate. All your doing is slowing them down. They will get around it. There is no solution. Nice try bold-fortune, but I think your wasting your time with this guide here. Nice try bold-fortune, but I think your wasting your time with this guide here. Could be Popcorned...but at least I'm trying, and so far my attempts have not been futile. I was getting up to twelve spambot posts a day before implementing this...and now, I am getting zero. What was that guy said? ...Oh yeah, "Works for me." Boy, you guys are defeatists. LOL Just sit back and let life slap you silly. Not me. tempnegro
there are still others that work....this is a lost cause......one site has registered over 1,500 .com domains (stuff like k3098vk.com) and use them for a disposable email address service nice try Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/518226-ban-known-disposable-emails-services/#findComment-588143467 Share on other sites
.Gavin
I suggest using K9 spam filtering tool, although you cannot delete the spam from the mail server, you can organise so that spam goes into the junk folder on your email client software. I've been using it on my work PC, having being unindated with spam and now i dont need to look into my spam folder at all, i dont get any spam into my inbox. marvellous! giantpotato
For my forum, I simple banned the posting of "http://" which seems to work fine, since pretty much all spam posting have link sin them. I don't let the spammers know which word is banned, so they can't edit their posts. For sites who need to post links you could tell you users to post hxxp:// instead, then have the board convert hxxp:// to http://. Users who read the forum rules would know how to post a link, but spammers wouldn't waste their time. The only problems is this doesn't prevent the registration of new spam accounts, only prevents spam posts.
