Refurbished Macbook Pro

Recommended Posts

My first foray into the Mac section here, anywho. I got an e-mail today from a friend saying that the university computer store at my college is going to be selling refurbished Macbook pros (the older ones) for $899. This seems like a really good deal and I'm tempted to get one. Note these are the older ones that, according to the ad, have the following specs:

15-inch, aluminum model

2.0 Intel Core Duo (different from the current Core 2 Duo, but can run Windows XP)

SuperDrive (DVD burner)

512MB RAM

80GB hard drive

128MB video card

iSight, remote, Airport, Bluetooth

iLife suite and standard Mac software

1-year limited warranty and eligible for AppleCare

Has anybody here had any experience with refurbished Apple products and is this really a good deal? This may very well be my first mac so any info would be appreciated, thanks.

Edit: I went about searching around and it seems most people here have had good experiences w/ apple refurb, so I guess that answers that question. Additionally this should be upgradeable in the future right? Since I've heard Macs like RAM so upgrading that would be big and maybe putting in a Core 2 Duo later on as I'd heard it is basically a drop-in replacement.

They are normally a good deal.

You don't state if they are apple refurbs or not, just make sure you get the full warranty on it and you will be laughing

Considering that exact model is going for $1,449.00 on the Apple Store refurb section I'd say it is a very good deal. You've got nothing to lose since Apple refurbs have the same 1 year warranty and are eligible for AppleCare. I've bought a few refurbished products and haven't had any problem with them.

I don't know if its true, but this macbook pro have some issues with the logic board

If that's true, I'd like to think they'd know about it and have it fixed since these are refurbished which would, I would think, mean they'd already had some flaw in them that was fixed along with any other known problems. And yes, this should be a certified Apple refurb since the university store is a certified Apple reseller. Thanks for all the quick replies so far, this helps since if I end up getting it, it'll be today since they only have 50 or so that are coming in.

Heatsink issue was on the MacBook. Only issue I have seen with the MacBook Pro logic board it a whining sound from the processor. This has now been fixed with an SMC and EFI update.... mostly.

Certified reseller is good, that means you get the year warranty, and yes the refurbs are faulty returns repaired and retested.

Hope this helps

So I ended up getting the mac, and I gotta say that this is nice. Still trying to find my way around, but so far it's awesome. Thanks for the info and all :).
