Overclocking E6300 + Asus P5B

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I want to overclock my current rig. The thing is that i am not sure how to do it since i have never overclocked. Please guide me with the softwares or articles or anything that can help me overclock this baby. :)

The link above should give an idea about my rig.

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate Edition. The heatsink and fan are the default one's that i got with the processor, besides this i have another fan in the case.

I am not having any cooling system in the case.

If you look at my sign I've managed quite well, but not nearly up to the point where my CPU or RAM limits further attempts. I've got some problems to get my board over 400MHz FSB since this seems to require proper voltage setting for the North and South bridge, aswell as for ICH, something P5B vanilla lack (the only voltage settings able to tune is vcore, vFSB and vdimm).

Sure, you can press it (i'm running 25% OC (2400 --> 3000MHz) stable), but don't be upset if the board limits further attempts. My CPU should easily be able to perform 3200MHz and even 3600MHz. Many users run theur E6300 at 3000MHz+ stable, perhaps not with P5B vanilla.

Sorry to dig up old topic guys, but I didnt want to create a new one...

Anyway I hav a c2d e6300 and I am thinking about swapping my current mobo and ram (see sig) for a couple of corsair 1gb 667mhz sticks and an asus p5b. What kinda speed do you think I would be able to achieve using stock cooling with this cpu? I am ideally looking for at least 2.3 Ghz.

As said above, the motherboard will limit you. You should be able to get 2.3 out of it. Upgrade the motherboard and you'll see some figures which rival those of the extreme editions though. Although overclocking friendly motherboard go up into the hundreds of pounds so work to your budget first.

hey guys i am a complete noob (have mercy upon me!) and have never overclocked before, but hey, first time for everything, no? anyways, i have an E6300 and a P5B-VM (is this the "vanilla" ive read about? ive read in many places that its not a good idea to overclock on it...). for memory, i have 512mb 533mhz ddr2 corsair (i plan to get more as im usually running low, but im broke for the moment).

if anyone is feeling particularly benevolent, could they help me out? perhaps with a step-by-step hold-my-hand absolute retard guide to what i have to do? ive looked at the bios screen but after that i have no idea what to do or what any of it means. also, for the record, i run my computer on 24/7, if that makes a difference (with regards to overheating and whatnot).

thanks!!! :)

I bought E6300 + P5B-deluxe/wifi but cant oc, cause i cant find a decent memory.

Anyway

This tread should help a bit.

Also J400uk if u think of OC-ing go for deluxe version and at least 800 MHz corsair sticks (dual channel kit and low latency sticks if possible) to give u more space to work with.

Yeah I did think about gettin the deluxe but I don;t think I will be able to afford it (I am only 16). Anyway with 4 x Corsair 512mb 667 ddr2 ram I should be able to OC to at least e6400 speeds. At the moment on my cheapo via chipset p5v vm dh I can barely OC at all and it only supports 533mhz ram so I will probably sell it to raise funds for new mobo.

I've managed to get my E6400 from i think 2.1? upto 2.68ghz but im limited by my DDR2-667 ram, not the motherboard, the P5B is fine for going further, you just need the memory, either some fancy ddr2-800 stuff that can overclock a bit or ddr2-1000 to get the max out of the cpu.

OK, I have been thinking would I be better of with gettin a gigabyte ds3 mobo instead of the asus p5b? I would be using it with my e6300 and 2gigs of ddr2 667 ram to upgrade my current setup, and I hope to be able to overlclock up to 2.3ghz + on stock cooling/voltage.

Sorry i have kind of hi-jacked this thread but I didnt want to make a new one.

I was playing around with my P5B and my E6400 and I can OC the crap outta this box i just need to get something other then the stock fan.

I can OC it to 3.21Ghz and it runs Super Hot in benchmarks however my system Oc'ed to 2.6 gets higher scores in PCMark05 probably because it's running more stable and not running super hot.

What are safe operating temperatures for the E6400?

Ideal operating temp is 60C for core 2 duos i believe. I find it odd you get better scores at a lower frequency, what ram do you have DJ? Its unlikely to mark you down due to temperature and stability, if it was unstable it wouldnt complete properly.

It's Buffalo DDR2-800 2GB Firestix i think. I'll post the exact specs on it when it's in front of me.

But yeah I thought that was bizzare as well I ran the benchmark twice.

I'll post my PCMark scores later on as well.

During High Loads it would peak at around 80C while running Prime 95 Torture X2.

Anybody know the temp that cooks the chip?

If i was you...and i am me...as i have a core 2 duo. I wouldnt be running it above 70C. Intel dont tend to release the temp just before it sets on fire, but it works kinda like this.

For example:

60C = 10 years of life

70C= 5 years of life

150C = 1 hour of life

If the lower clock speed gets higher results, use that :p

OK Guys, I got my new motherboard today. I only managed to overclock it to 2.13Ghz (304bus speed) which is e6400 stock speed due to my ram. Very pleased with it but for some reason the processor is running at 68 degrees all the time. Tried re-seating the heatsink to no avail so I will get some thermal paste. It could just be a dodgy temperature sensor but it is not the heatsink as I tried two intel reference c2d ones to no avail. Anyone got any ideas what else the problem could be, as once I have my ddr2 800 ram I am planning to overclock it like crazy but temerpatures are to high.

I'm using a E6400 with P5B vanilla and have on problems oc'ing to 8x400MHz using Intel stock cooler.

Some advice:

- flash bios to latest version!! With the early bios version, I could barely reach 300 FSB (from 266), now I get 400.

WARNING though: alot of users could not POST the system after flashing the bios - including myself - because of mem compatibity probs, depending on the RAM you're using; those can usually be solved by using some cheap 533Mhz stick, booting and changing the auto mem timings in bios to the timings your RAM is tested at.

- If 400 doesnt work, try 401Mhz FBS: the chip uses some other strapping which is easier on the MB it seems... It's worth a try.

- I had insane temps when oc'ing to 8x400 with stock cooler: up to 83?C!! I read somewhere that the system shuts down when it gets over 85?C. By using some Arctic cooler paste I got 75?C+ temps, and by installing a new cooler (Arctic Freezer Pro 7 - 30$) I get 65-70?C at max load.

Finally some help needed: could anyone who got his E6400 higher than 8x400 give me some advice how to do it? 410 is not stable for me, despite the low temps and the upped voltages (vcore 1,45)?
