+BudMan MVC Posted December 28, 2006 MVC Share Posted December 28, 2006 switcher? You mean a switch, What are the models of your switches? Yes most any someone recent switch will support auto mdi-x and any cat 5 cable will work to connect them together.. As to fiberoptic? You would have to give some details of what your wanting to do exactly. +BudMan MVC Posted December 28, 2006 MVC Share Posted December 28, 2006 Ah -- your going to fiberoptic for your inet connect? Where does the other end of the fiberoptic go?? Some ISP or still your network - another building, etc.. Sure a media-convertor will work just fine.. Im not sure I would plug in the internet directly into your lan though? Do you not have a border router between the internet and your computers? Or is this just an extension of your lan? And yes I show http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/detail....mp;sku=3C16791A 3Com? OfficeConnect? Dual Speed Switch 8 Product #: 3C16791A # Auto MDI-MDIX on every port simplifies network expansion So you do not need a crossover cable to connect to another switch. +BudMan MVC Posted December 29, 2006 MVC Share Posted December 29, 2006 hmmm -- you are right, I do not show that model number stating it supports auto mdix But in the manual for the switch http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/hub...1679-3aaa02.pdf OfficeConnect Switch 5 (3C16793) and Switch 8 (3C16794) Installation Guide It shows an uplink switch on the back, so yes you can daisy chain switches without the need of a crossover cable. So it does not really matter what the other switch supports.. I could not find a manual for it either. As to your bandwidth question -- well that would depend on what everyone will be doing if 10kb is enough.. Does not sound like much.. Not sure if limiting everyone to 10kb would be the best solution to distributing the bandwidth among the machines.. How exactly are you doing that? Your Router supports QOS / Bandwidth shaping I would assume - which router? p858snake
you will need one on either end of the cable so that is why you need two of them Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/524945-2-x-8-port-switcher/#findComment-588204300 Share on other sites
TurboTuna
I don't 100% understand what your doing here, maybe its just me; early mornings and all that. But yeah, you would need two. MAybe post what your goal is? or draw a simple paint diagram? They say a picture paints a thousand words.
